HRH Prince Andrew, the Duke of York Visits Appleby College

HRH Prince Andrew, the Duke of York visited Appleby College on May 10 where he addressed the students of Round Square. Prince Andrew is a patron of Round Square, along with other distinguished members Sonia Gandhi and Nelson Mandela.

Round Square is a world-wide association of more than 50 schools on five continents sharing unique and ambitious goals. Students attending Round Square schools make a strong commitment, beyond academic excellence, to personal development and responsibility. This is achieved by participating in community service, work projects, exchange program and adventuring, which can take students half way around the world.

Appleby has been a member of Round Square since 1992 and in the past five years alone has sent more than 100 students to projects worldwide. This membership has allowed Appleby students to aspire to Round Square’s IDEALS – internationalism, democracy, environment, adventure, leadership and service. Most recently, Appleby students and even parents have participated in projects in Thailand, where they installed a clean drinking water supply in a hill-tribe village; in Kenya, where they constructed a residential facility for disabled girls aged six to 15; and in India, where they worked closely with individuals affected by leprosy. Students, parents and faculty have also participated in trips to Peru, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Botswana.
