Each Sports & Adventure camp is designed to provide skill development, fair play and fun competition while also allowing campers to make lifelong memories and have fun! From tennis to golf and rock climbing to triathlon, there is a Sports & Adventure camp for everyone at Appleby. All camps are led by outstanding instructional staff, coaches and teachers who ensure that campers enjoy their week and learn new skills. Campers just learning a sport and those who are experienced players will find a specific camp that fits their training and learning needs. Blending instruction, competition, fun challenges, and sport- specific rule comprehension throughout the week culminates with a large tournament-style event and/or demonstration every Friday! Recreational swim time in Appleby’s indoor pool is included in the majority of camps as well as a nutritious lunch, with hot selections, for all full-day programs.

 

Advanced Soccer (10-15 yrs.)

Advanced Soccer is designed for the advanced field player and goalkeeper who need more technical, tactical, and competition training. More focus is on speed moves, rhythms, team defensive shape, group attack, one on one, high and low pressure defending, finishing and ball mastery/control.

Participants in this program should have a solid fitness base and experience playing soccer so they will be able to participate in all drills and games. Advance Soccer campers must provide their own gear (soccer cleats, shin pads, soccer socks) and apparel to properly and effectively participate. The first day of the camp program will allow for coaches to assess individualized skills and experience levels and place each camper in groups accordingly for the week. 

Soccer athletes will receive technical skill training from certified, high level coaches who use a variety of drills including classroom sessions, film studies and games to take soccer skills to the next level! Improve your footwork, first touch, passing, trapping, technical precision, heading and shooting.

Well-rounded days will be full of small sided games to work on techniques and strategies under pressure, combined with drills, skill development and also a recreational swim. An additional element of our Advanced Soccer campers’ overall experience is film breakdowns and studying professional players in their technical delivery of skill sets. Daily competitions allow players to use their tactical knowledge, skills and athleticism in full sided games with a team focus and competitive edge.

Adventure Pursuits (Canoeing & Rock Climbing) (10-15 yrs.)

Campers ages 10 – 15 years, are invited to spend a week on our beautiful waterfront campus for teambuilding, paddling, and of course adventure! Through a unique combination of indoor climbing, canoeing and waterfront games, campers enjoy a fun-filled week while acquiring lifelong skills. Highly qualified and national-level instructors will introduce campers to paddling with a partner, canoe safety, power strokes and steering strokes. Weather permitting; campers spend at least two hours daily on the water learning a variety of canoe skills. Campers learn how to maneuver a canoe using such techniques as the "J" stroke and the "C" stroke, as well as pivoting using the draw and pry strokes. Rescue options are discussed and demonstrated by the instructors for awareness. One day each week the group embarks on a fun, three to four hour canoe trip along Lake Ontario’s shoreline, a wonderful and safe introduction to longer ventures. To meet the safety requirements for waterfront activities, please note that all campers must have the equivalent swimming ability of the Lifesaving Society Swimmer 4 level as well as pass a swimming and treading test (10 continuous lengths and 2 minutes of continuous treading) on the first morning of the week. All campers should bring a proper-fit personal life jacket and appropriate water shoes for canoeing. 

Each afternoon, campers get to have fun on the indoor climbing wall and will learn the basic fundamentals of top rope climbing and solving boulder problems through technique demonstration, games and practice. Campers also acquire skills in belaying, improving their climbing technique and gaining confidence rapidly. Led by certified instructors, the rock climbing focus is to encourage and develop excellent team work, goal setting and oral communication skills. Inclusive to the benefits of indoor rock climbing are muscle development, good balance, discipline, coordination, and problem solving skills. Campers should bring running shoes (not crocs) for climbing in the afternoon.

The program also includes daily swimming in Appleby’s pool and a nutritious meal with hot selections. Adventure Pursuits is an active and engaging program where campers gain valuable skills in communication, cohesion and trust! From racing fellow canoers, to laughing with new friends to challenging themselves to the top of the rockwall, campers will have a great time in Adventure Pursuits!

Adventure Pursuits Plus (10-15 yrs.)

Are you looking to take your camp experience to new heights this summer? Have you ever looked at a rock face and wondered what it would be like to climb it? Do you want to test out your Stand Up Paddleboarding skills?

Each week campers will spend time, weather permitting, on our gorgeous waterfront and try their hand on our indoor climbing wall. To enhance this experience even more, a certified stand up paddle board instructor will join us for a morning and instruct campers on how to keep their balance on the board, play some teambuilding games, and even try out some fancy moves! In addition to paddleboarding, campers will go off campus to Rattlesnake Provincial Park with highly qualified Adventureworks Instructors. Campers will learn how to smear, wedge, and how to create a bomb-proof anchor (more strength than the climbing rope).

To meet the safety requirements for waterfront activities, please note that all campers must have the equivalent swimming ability of the Lifesaving Society Swimmer 4 level as well as pass a swimming and treading test (10 continuous lengths and 2 minutes of continuous treading) on the first morning of the week. All campers should bring a proper-fit personal life jacket and appropriate water shoes for canoeing in the morning, and comfortable gym clothes with secure running or climbing shoes for the afternoon. 
 
The program also includes daily swimming in Appleby’s pool and a nutritious meal with hot selections. Adventure Pursuits Plus is an active and engaging program where campers gain valuable skills in communication, cohesion and trust! From racing fellow canoers, to laughing with new friends to challenging themselves to the top of a real rockwall, campers will have a great time in Adventure Pursuits Plus!

Basketball (7-15 yrs.)

This program provides more than four hours of daily basketball instruction. Certified teachers and coaches have developed a program that focuses on the key techniques with an emphasis on ball handling, shooting, and game comprehension. Using Appleby’s indoor and outdoor courts, development is reinforced through modified games and full scrimmage play. Qualified coaches, teachers and camp staff provide top-level instruction in all fundamentals essential to learning and improving basketball skills and encourage healthy competition.

Participants also learn the rules of play, offensive and defensive skills, the code of conduct for the game, all in a fun and challenging atmosphere. Grouped according to age and ability, the program also includes supervised recreational activities such as swimming as well as a nutritious lunch, with hot selections in Appleby’s cafeteria.

Cheerleading Camp  (7-15 yrs.)

Appleby needs a new cheer! Learn the skills to become an all-star cheerleader!  Campers will learn a variety of cheerleading techniques from jumps, basic tumbling, dance, stunts, pyramids and more. Our cheerleaders will train in a fun, positive energetic environment and will create routines, learn valuable team work and dependability skills. Stretching, strength and conditioning exercises to help increase flexibility and agility will also take place each day to ensure maximum cheer potential.  Join us Friday afternoon for a Cheerleading demonstration, showcasing all the skills developed and choreography implemented throughout the week.

With our many Sports camps taking place each week, our new Cheerleading team will have lots of practice in cheering the teams to victory! Campers will also enjoy supervised daily swim as well as a nutritious lunch, with hot selections in Appleby’s cafeteria.

A highlight of Appleby’s summer offerings each year, Exploring the Sports camp gives campers an opportunity to try their hand at a wide variety of sports, games, and team challenges. Blending instruction, competition and fun challenges creates a great experience for all participants. Our staff is an exceptional collection of certified teachers, instructors, assistants and volunteers who entertain/educate daily. Exploring the Sports provides a fun introduction to many traditional sports including soccer, volleyball, swimming, softball, basketball, cricket, floor hockey, badminton and bowling through modified game play and skill-building sessions. Co-operative tasks and challenges help these developing athletes to develop an appreciation of teamwork, adaptability, and respect for instruction and rules of play. Campers also will work on a selection of universal sports-related skills through cooperative drills and games such as kanga cricket, flag tag, dodgeball, capture the flag, team relay races and benchball! Our aim for this camp is to nurture an appreciation of sport and provide an environment where all campers achieve success regardless of their athletic ability.

Grouped depending on numbers, age and ability, participants also realize measurable gains in coordination, confidence and appreciation for various sports and games. All full-day programs include a hot lunch and recreational swim time. Appleby campers get a chance to enjoy the use of amazing facilities including our many playing fields, the gymnasium, squash courts and indoor pool. The end of each week culminates with a Friday ultimate sports tournament and scavenger hunt!

Extreme Adventure Challenge (10-15 yrs.)

Building upon our extremely popular Exploring the Sports camp - we have created an extra challenge week incorporating a variety of sports/games into daily team challenges to accumulate points all week and culminating in the ultimate Appleby extreme challenge course! Extreme Sports Challenge is designed to encourage teamwork, problem solving, athletic contests and friendly competition between campers who love sports and are seeking a few thrills and a whole lot of fun. Think Survivor meets the Amazing Race, meets Mantracker.... but all age-appropriate, modified and designed for your children and of course all just for fun! Campers will run through a challenging course with obstacles, learn bouldering on our rock climbing wall, orienteering exercises, and our giant, downhill extreme slip & slide! This camp is about risk taking, teamwork and skill development while being supported by experienced and knowledgeable instructors. Many of the physical activities require the support of fellow campers/teammates so this camp fosters team-building skills and teaches participants to trust in others and to be trustworthy. This action packed week involves a series of daily activities and challenges and campers will develop a positive and confident attitude toward themselves and others!

Flag Football (10-15 yrs.)

A fun and exciting introduction to the fast-paced, non-contact game of Flag Football! This week-long camp is the perfect program for young athletes who want to learn the game or for those who simply want to brush up on their skills in preparation for league play. Participants will learn skills on both sides of the ball including the core components of passing, catching, and de-flagging or defensive positioning - all presented in a fun and positive environment. Campers will learn fundamental skills designed to improve speed, agility, and overall athleticism. Run by experienced and passionate football instructors and coaches, Flag Football camp will take campers running, passing, catching and kicking to a higher level. Whatever your skill, there’s something for every camper in this non-contact flag football camp! Success in this sport depends on campers working together as a team. Each week will culminate with the Appleby Flag Football Cup, giving participants a chance to showcase their skills in a playoff tournament. Global Sports Challenge (7-15 yrs.)

The wonderful world of sports is mostly limited to the best known, watched or played sports, but each country has a sport that is unique to them, maybe it originated there or perhaps they adapted it to make it their own. Global Sports Challenge is taking a closer look at some sports that aren’t as mainstream, yet true, sports of the world! Athletes will enjoy new skills and strategy from different sports such as: Gaelic Football, Cricket, Disc Golf, Rugby, Lacrosse, Aussie Rules, Quidditch, Jai Alai, Ga-Ga Ball and many more! Daily World Cups, tournaments, and other sport-specific traditions will be a part of this exciting new camp program.  Grouped according to age and ability, the program also includes supervised recreational activities such as swimming as well as a nutritious lunch, with hot selections in Appleby’s cafeteria.

Golf Jr. Full Day (7-10 yrs.)

 Appleby’s Golf camp provides campers the opportunity to learn basic fundamentals as well as how to play, practice and have fun. This full-day camp is aimed at beginner golfers ages 7 – 10 and takes place at Appleby’s on-campus facility. This camp is focused on growing love for the game of golf and improving campers’ golf skills, whether new to the game or with previous experience. All facets of the game will be covered including putting, chipping, pitching and full swing as well as elements of play such as rules, etiquette, scoring and equipment. Developing hand-eye coordination, stability training & balance, and improving mental focus will be a few of the skills that campers will learn while building their overall confidence. Our golf instructors bring a wealth of teaching experience as well as a background in children’s education, providing a fun approach to learning to campers who will be grouped by ability. Campers should bring their own putter, wedge and wood /driver (which can be stored securely in golf camp classroom for the duration of the camp week), and they should bring enthusiasm and a willingness to learn! Golfers will also enjoy a recreational swim time as well as a nutritious lunch, with hot selections in Appleby’s cafeteria.

Golf Sr. (10-15 yrs.)

Appleby’s Sr. Golf camp provides the perfect environment for your budding golfer to develop, practice and improve his/her golf game! This camp takes place at Appleby’s on-campus facility and is for campers aged 10 -15 who are looking to brush up on their skills in all areas of the game and have fun. Time will be spent on improving fundamentals and practice habits in the following areas: putting, chipping, pitching, full swing, sand game, trouble shots, mental game, shot selection/course management and goal setting. In addition to introducing and improving technique, the program covers golf rules, safety and etiquette. The program will help beginners lay an excellent foundation for playing the game, and provide more experienced players with specific short-game practice and instruction. Qualified coaches, teachers and camp staff provide top-level instruction and will support campers in analyzing, evaluating and structuring drills that will lead to total game development. Golf Sr. aims to develop all aspects of campers' golfing game while having fun learning exciting new skills that will boost their overall confidence. An Appleby Golf Tournament will take place at Golf Sr. camp and healthy competition is encouraged. Campers should bring their own putter, wedge and wood / driver. Recreational swimming time and a nutritious hot lunch is also included.

Introduction to Martial Arts  (7-10 yrs.)

With a focus on fun and learning this Introduction to Martial Arts camp takes an exciting look into the fundamentals of this ancient art form in a safe and positive environment. This camp is a great introduction to martial arts for campers who do not have any previous experience and want to find out more about martial arts before committing to a longer term program. As well, it is also a great supplementary training experience for current students to augment their existing program so they don’t lose any progress throughout the summer. Best of all, this camp is packed with fun and exciting activities, swimming, lunch on top of the fun martial arts.

Campers between the ages of 7 and 10 who are still developing mental and physical skills can gain a lot from this program. Facilitated in a safe and controlled atmosphere, our instructors are highly trained (4th degree black belt) and will ensure that your child has fun and makes new friends. They will learn the basics of punching, kicking, rolling, flipping and even some basic self-defense! Campers more importantly learn how to diffuse situations before they ever become violent. That's the true power of martial arts.

Children move every part of their bodies when they practice martial arts, getting a full-body workout and becoming more flexible and fit in due course. With all the physical activity involved, it's the perfect opportunity for kids to release all the high amounts of energy they have! Aside from physical activity, there are many other benefits as the discipline has a philosophy of respect, courtesy and a positive attitude that inspires campers to become more positive, respectful and courteous. Uniforms are not required, however if you have one please wear it. Comfortable clothing is recommended.

Family and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend a Friday afternoon Martial Arts Demonstration of the skill sets developed and acquired throughout the week.

Performance Swim Experience (a.m. only) (10-15 yrs.)

Get active and have some fun in the pool this summer with our Performance Swim Experience camp! Nationally recognized swimming coaches and other qualified lifeguard instructors lead this 1 week, half-day program targeting stroke improvement for 10-15 year old aspiring swimmers. Approximately 70 per cent of instructional time is spent in water. Swimmers will experience individualized attention analyzing technique for all common strokes, while also receiving expert instruction in starts, turns and finishes. Performance Swim Experience camp focuses on teaching the three important fundamentals of faster swimming; streamlining, using your body effectively and sustaining your speed. The program also provides guidance in nutrition and physical conditioning. This program is suitable for current competitive swimmers and also for children who would like a ‘first experience’ in competition. This is not a learn-to-swim program however high-level experience is not required. In between swimming drills and practice in Appleby’s pool, our dry-land training will introduce campers to methods of stretching, core body exercise, strength-training, mental training, nutrition and recovery that helps swimmers succeed. All of these disciplines are important in order to maximize improvement.

You don’t have to be an extremely competitive swimmer to benefit from Appleby’s Performance Swim Experience camp. In fact, some of the greatest pleasures we have are from improving the skills of a fitness swimmer who simply wants to get better, or the Triathlete who hasn’t quite mastered the art of swimming. Any aspiring swimmers can benefit from this camp.

Campers can create a full-day experience, including lunch provision, by combining with the Try-Triathlon or Exploring the Sports afternoon program.

Sailing (10-15 yrs.) 

Have you ever wanted to learn how to sail on a keelboat, or refine your sailing skills and find that perfect cut on the open water?  Try something different this summer, and join Appleby Camps for an engaging sailing program on a 7.5m keelboat out of Bronte Harbour!  We have joined forces with National One Design Sailing Academy, who will provide on-board Transport Canada certified instructors with top notch sailing experience and together we have designed a program to introduce 10 to 15 year olds to the basics of sailing!  Our five-day schedule uses Flying Tiger 7.5 meter (25 feet) boats with carbon fibre masts that campers will find exciting and safe to sail!  

Campers will learn water safety, rigging, tacking, jibing and basic rescue procedures. Campers will sail with a maximum of 6 other campers who can all sit comfortably together and easily get instruction from the coaching instructors in the spacious seating onboard the keelboat.  Everyone learns to steer and crew all positions while working towards the comprehensive Sail Canada course curriculum known as “CANSail” program levels.  CANSail level 1, 2, or 3 certifications may be earned by campers who demonstrate sufficient learned skills as observed by the instructors. 

To meet the safety requirements for waterfront activities, please note that all campers must wear soft-soled running shoes and complete a swim proficiency test (equivalent swimming ability of the Lifesaving Society Swimmer 4 level) as well as pass a swimming and treading test in Appleby’s indoor pool on the first morning of the week.  A transport Canada certified PFD will be provided for all participants and must be worn at all times on board the boats or docks in Bronte Harbour, or campers may bring their own lifejackets if they prefer. 

Campers will be accompanied by an Appleby Camp instructor, who will escort them on a school bus to and from Appleby campus- to Bronte Harbour, and will be on-board the keelboats daily as well.  Lunches will be provided daily, and Appleby Before & After care, and Busing are available for this program – please see tab for more details.  You'll receive an e-mail, prior to the week of the program with a 1DSailing waiver, suggested clothing, and other useful information.  Completed waivers are required and should be brought to the first day of camp. 

PLEASE JOIN YOUR CHILD(REN) AT BRONTE HARBOUR FOR A 2:30PM SAILING SHOWCASE! All campers can be dismissed following the sailing showcase to parents/guardians who attended. For those campers in after-care or for those campers who do not have a parent/guardian at Bronte Harbour, they will be taken on the bus back to camp for regular dismissal. Bus departs from Bronte Harbour 3:00pm daily, including on Friday's sailing showcase.

Soccer (7-15 yrs.)

This is an outstanding soccer development program for players of all ages. Qualified instructors, coaches and teachers guide young players through a fun-filled challenging week of soccer skills with energy and enthusiasm. Fundamental skills acquisition forms the basis of the program, and every participant should make solid progress in a very engaging environment, grouped depending on numbers, by age and ability. 

Team play concepts and goalkeeping instruction are also featured. A nutritious lunch with hot selections is included as well as supervised activities and recreational swimming periods help to form an action-packed day. At the end of each week, participants take part in the Appleby World Cup Soccer Tournament and celebration! Emphasis is placed on sportsmanship, basic soccer skills (passing, dribbling, headers, throw-ins), positional responsibilities and an overall love for one of the most popular team sports in the world!

Survival Skills  (10-15 yrs.)

This adventurous week will be full of physical and mental challenges, outdoor adventures, co-operative games, theme days, and plenty of team building activities that develop the skills essential to survive in the wilderness while at the same time growing campers' understanding of the urban wilderness! Through exploration and adventure alongside our experienced wilderness guides and outdoor educators, campers work together in small groups gaining knowledge of plants, mammals, tracking, birds and survival skills.

With a focus on appreciation of nature, community and self, our highly trained instructors facilitate a variety of skill building hands-on activities such as: camp safety, orienteering exercises, shelter building, Cordage (making rope out of plants), fire by friction, plant identification, bush craft: knots, tarps, ropes, wood, and primitive tools such as bows, arrows, stone tools and more. Campers will have skills reinforced during a weekly archery workshop led by experienced and qualified instructors. Campers will learn to use field guides to identify and research local wildlife.  Come and have an adventure in the urban wilderness, outside having a blast with new friends, and build skills that will serve for a lifetime.

Tennis (7-15 yrs.)

Our popular Summer Tennis Camp is appropriate for beginner, intermediate and advanced players and takes place on Appleby’s five hard tennis courts. During more than four hours of court practice and play daily, campers are grouped by age and skill level. Our expert instructional staff takes great pride in providing a flexible program that caters to campers needs within small groups. 

Emphasis is placed on skill development and fun through a circuit of drills and games. Essential skills including the forehand, backhand, lob, serve and volley techniques are emphasized along with court etiquette and game strategy. The Appleby Tennis Camp Tournament takes place on Fridays for all campers. A nutritious lunch, with hot selections in Appleby’s cafeteria is included daily. Campers will work up a sweat on the court, join in some recreational games and be able to cool off in Appleby’s indoor swimming pool. *Please bring your own tennis racquet*

Trip Tastic! (10-15 yrs.)  

Why do we call this Adventure camp Trip Tastic you ask?! Because campers will enjoy daily off-site field trips that are fantastic! Plenty of physical activity – check! Exposure to some fun new places – check! Safety as a number one priority – check! Super cool sports – check!

This new camp will check all the boxes for fun-filled days this summer. Qualified instructors and camp staff will be closely supervising daily trips and chartered Appleby school busses will escort campers to all the fun destinations. Admission, transportation and lunch is included. Lunch is either provided by the location, or Appleby provides a bag lunch to each camper daily. Come and make some new friends this summer and have an exciting week of fantastic field trips!  All trips are subject to change.

Try-Triathlon (p.m.) (7-15 yrs.)

This half day, week-long experience introduces campers to the joys of the triathlon experience in a safe, supervised environment where they will have fun swimming, biking and running. Appropriate for beginners and for youngsters in the novice years of the sport, Appleby’s cross-country course, bike routes and indoor swimming pool provide a fantastic backdrop for a practice and competition experience. Campers will have fun meeting new friends and joining in the friendly competition!

Qualified teachers and camp staff will focus on the achievement of each camper. Our goal is to inspire self-confidence and provide a positive experience. The distance each camper completes for the swim, bike and run will vary based on their age and ability. In the pool, lifeguards and qualified instructors aim to teach campers to improve their swim skills, strokes and turns for safety reasons please note that all campers must have the equivalent swimming ability of the Lifesaving Society Swimmer 3 level. The bike course is best suited to mountain-style bikes and all campers must have a CSA approved bike helmet with a chin strap. The running course will take place on the very scenic running trail around Appleby’s campus. On the Friday afternoon family and friends are invited to watch campers accomplish their triathlon! All that’s required is a swim suit, goggles, bike in good working order, CSA approved helmet, running shoes and lots of enthusiasm! 

This is a half-day afternoon program and participants are encouraged to combine this with other Appleby programs if a full-day experience is sought. To customize a full-day program that includes a hot lunch, choose from morning camps such as Exploring the Sports or Performance Swim.

Volleyball (10-15 yrs.)

Learn the fundamentals of the game of volleyball, while having fun on our outdoor beach volleyball courts or indoor gym facilities! This camp is ideal for all skill levels of players and focuses on helping you maximize your talent, improve your leadership, mental toughness, increase confidence, set and achieve goals. Develop a more in-depth understanding of the game while learning the fundamental skills of volleying, passing, bumping, serving, setting, digging, and hitting. This camp is directed by qualified experienced instructors in a fun, supportive environment where games are modified and progressive to teach tactical understanding. Participants will benefit from an improved level of fitness, skill-specific drills, game play opportunities and the chance to meet other local players. There will also be recreational pool sessions in the indoor pool, allowing campers to take a break and reflect on their volleyball specific training, while still bonding with new friends and staying active. A nutritious lunch is provided so that volleyball campers have lots of energy to play!
