Appleby College: 2015 Alumni Ties

June 2017

A Special Message from Innes van Nostrand, Principal

On behalf of Appleby College’s Board of Governors, I am pleased to announce the election of Aubrey W. Baillie ’63 as the incoming Chair of the Board.

One of the school's greatest champions in our history, Aubrey has served on Appleby’s Board of Governors since 1971 and is the 14th Chair in the school’s 106-year history. In fact, this is not the first time Aubrey has held the position of Appleby’s Chair of the Board as he served in the role from 1989 to 1997. Between 1997 and now, Aubrey has chaired the Appleby College Foundation Board.

“I would like to thank and acknowledge the impact of outgoing Chair Malcolm Butterfield, who demonstrated tremendous commitment and calm leadership during his seven years as Board Chair. His contribution to the school’s success and the experiences of our students over that time is deeply appreciated,” said Aubrey. Malcolm will be formally thanked at the annual Chair's Dinner taking place this week, as well as at Closing Day Ceremonies.

Aubrey is deeply passionate about his community, and brings a wealth of experience in the areas of leadership and governance. From 1975 to 1980, Aubrey's father, Frank W. Baillie '31 also chaired the Board of Governors. As an Appleby alumnus, parent and grandfather, Aubrey offers unique insight into where we’ve come from, and where we can go as one of Canada’s leading independent schools.

As Chair, Aubrey will lead the Board in furthering Appleby’s strategic initiatives and priorities, including programme innovation, the completion of the school’s new athletics and student life centre, and the commitment to grow Appleby’s financial assistance programme. We are very fortunate to have an individual with an unparalleled combination of experience and unbridled commitment once again take on this critical role at Appleby.

This spring, Appleby students competed hard, taking home a number of Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA) championship titles.

Congratulations to our Junior Boys' Rugby team for their performance against Crescent School, winning the championship game 19-17; to the Varsity Girls who won 17-10 against Ridley College and the Varsity Boys who beat St. Andrew's College 7-3. The Varsity Girls' CISAA championship win is the first Division 1 Championship in school history and the CISAA wins for our Boys' Rugby teams are back-to-back championships!

In soccer, the Varsity Girls' Soccer team had an amazing season and overcame two multigoal deficits to beat Villanova College 6-5 in the final, for the school's third consecutive CISAA championship win. The Under-14 Girls' Soccer team defeated Ridley College 2-0, becoming 2017 CISAA champions, while the Junior Girls' Soccer team earned CISAA silver against Villanova. CISAA silver was also secured by Appleby's Varsity Girls' Softball team against Havergal College.

Our Varsity Track and Field team has caught the attention of competitors – Upper One student Immy Govan and Upper Two student Ibrahim Ayorinde captured CISAA gold in the midget girls and junior boys 100m and 200m, as well as set meet records!

Appleby’s Alumnus
Sam Gudewill '73

Earlier this spring, while visiting Appleby, alumnus Sam Gudewill '73 shared his fondest school memories and reflected on the impact the A.W.B. Alumni Centre for Athletics and Student Life will have on student experience. "The whole point of the exercise is to give back to those who helped you," shared Sam. "My time has come and gone in many respects, but it’s about the future." Please click here to watch Sam’s special message to the community on the importance of the A.W.B. Alumni Centre.
