With exams currently underway, I'd like to take this opportunity to wish students all the best, including our Upper One students as they participate in ASCENT, as well as our Middle Two students who are completing their Presentations of Learning. It’s an exciting time as students apply the knowledge and skills they've worked so hard to achieve over the course of the year.

In less than two weeks, Appleby will celebrate Closing Day – one of the most anticipated events of the year, which marks a great life milestone. The occasion is a wonderful celebration for the Appleby community and will take place on Tuesday, June 27. An opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of the graduating class, Closing Day is also a day to commend the achievements of students in all grades. Please view the letter to the graduating class that includes the day's schedule to help you plan your day accordingly. As a reminder, all students are expected to attend the ceremony starting at 10:30 a.m.

The 2016-2017 school year has been a tremendous one, filled with a number of extraordinary achievements in academics, the arts, community life, service and athletics. We are so proud of our students and their teachers. Thank you to all students, employees, parents and alumni for your contribution and participation in what has truly been a successful year.

I look forward to seeing you on Closing Day!

Innes van Nostrand

If a student has an unverified absence from an examination, POL or ASCENT day then the student will receive zero for the evaluation until the absence is verified and approved. In the case of illness, the student must have visited his/her family doctor, the hospital emergency ward, or the Appleby College Health Centre, and provide Fraser Grant, assistant head of school, academics with a medical note stating the exact date(s) the student was seen for treatment. For any other absence to be considered verified, approval of the absence must be pre-arranged in a meeting with Fraser Grant.

As part of the school's end of year activities, all student lockers need to be cleaned out during the exam period. Please make sure they are cleaned out and locks removed by Tuesday, June 20 at 5:00 p.m. After that time, any remaining locks on lockers will be removed, items bagged, and sent to the Lost and Found in the McCraney Barn. Changes to Extra Credit Reading Program for 2017-2018 Academic Year

In recent years, students have had the opportunity to take part in an optional extra credit reading program in their English classes. This program gave students the chance to read three additional texts (one per reporting period) and then pass a test to earn an additional one percent, per text. This extra credit program is continuing, but changing slightly for the upcoming 2017-2018 school year. There will now be one extra credit text per English course. If students wish to take part they are encouraged to read the extra credit text for their course in the summer, as the test will only be offered in the fall of 2017. Should students pass that test, they will earn an extra percent towards their grade in English. Although students are encouraged to take part in the extra credit reading program, it is not mandatory. Please note - summer reading is mandatory for each English course, click here to view the 2017-2018 summer reading list. If you have any questions, please contact Andrew Bryce, department head, English.

Summer School Credit and Enrichment Programs

Students interested in taking a summer school course for credit or program for enrichment must complete the Appleby College Summer School permission/application form and return it to the guidance office. Students taking courses for credit will be placed into the appropriate grade level for September 2017 course selection once the permission form is submitted. Report cards indicating credit completion are required to be received by the Guidance office before Tuesday, August 29. If proof of credit completion is not received by this date, students will be placed into the course for which they have completed the prerequisite. Possible Summer Opportunities (for credit and enrichment), both local and international, can be viewed on the Guidance InfoSite. For further questions please contact Michelle Frigo, guidance counsellor.

Course Selections

Returning students interested in modifying elective courses they selected for the 2017-2018 academic year may do so in person on Wednesday, August 30 and Thursday, August 31 between 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. If students are unable to come in at the end of the summer, contact the guidance office and we will process your request accordingly. Please be aware that there are already some elective courses that have a waitlist. If you have any questions, please contact guidance at guidance@appleby.on.ca.
