Fine Wine Auction 2009
Appleby College will hold its fifth biennial Fine Wine Auction on Thursday, May 7, 2009. The evening features a silent auction, a standing dinner reception beginning at 6:30 p.m. and a live auction at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $100 each and everyone is welcome to attend. An exciting addition to this year’s event is a VIP sommelier-led rare wine tasting starting at 6:00 p.m. that will highlight a collection of outstanding wines from 1989 vintages. A limited number of VIP tickets are still available for $150.
To date, we have acquired over $320,00-worth of fine and rare wines for the Auction. The Auction catalogue listing the wines available at the Live and Silent Auction can be viewed here. Please note that minor alterations may be made to the list of wines the night of the event.

Featured Wines
Appleby College Fine Wine Auction co-chairs, Dr. Rob Jones and Pierre Gagnon, are excited to give you a peek into some of the wines offered during the auction:
The 1989 Chateau Petrus, given a 100-point rating by wine aficionado Robert Parker and the Wine Spectator. Described by the International Wine Cellar as full, deep red with aromas of red berry, liqueur, earth, truffle and exotic woodsmoke, the wine is hugely sweet and fat with great ripeness and opulence and marvelous chewy depth. It finishes with tongue-dusting tannins and fabulous persistence. The advised drinking date is 2005 to 2025, making it a perfect bottle of wine to enjoy right after the auction.
Domaine de la Romanee-Conti is the most famous wine estate in all of Burgundy, if not the world. The Fine Wine Auction will feature two wines from this exceptional area: an '85 DRC La Tache and the '72 DRC Romanee Conti. In 2007, a 12-bottle case of 1967 Romanee Conti sold for $119,259, making it the most expensive case of wine ever sold.
Robert Mondavi was a visionary winemaker who helped lead California wine into international prominence. A good selection of Mondavi Reserve wines will be available at the Fine Wine Auction like the 2001 Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. It has a deep, intense dark fruit character and earthy truffle complexity.
The auction will feature a rare and exceptional three-litre 1989 Chateau Margaux bottle that is ready to be opened or reserved for another 20 years. It is a wine from a remarkable vintage with a delightful nose, and is seductive and balanced. The Wine Spectator gave it a 95-point ranking.
Six bottles of Chateau Latour 1989 will be available for bidding at the fine wine auction. Chateau Latour is perhaps the most classical and consistent of all the first growths from Bordeaux, and 1989 was one of the most outstanding years available.
A 1990 Chateau Montrose will be available for auction. Given a 100 point rating by wine expert Robert Parker, the Montrose is spectacularly intense and one of the most concentrated and monumental wines made in Bordeaux in recent decades. It is ready to enjoy or cellared for another 20 years.
