Volunteers

ACPA Volunteering at a Glance

Appleby’s mission is to educate and enable young men and women to become leaders of character, major contributors to, and valued representatives of their local, national and international communities. This can only be achieved with the help of our many volunteers. Volunteering provides a rewarding way to become involved with the events, programs and people that support our school.  There are numerous opportunities throughout the school year for involvement to suit your schedule. Apply today.

WHO?

Hundreds of volunteers from the Appleby community are involved with events and programs that make Appleby College the remarkable school it is.

Appleby’s volunteers:

  • Come from all constituencies of the Appleby community: parents, guardians, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents and friends of the school.
  • Partner with faculty and administration to deliver the Appleby College mission.
  • Add variety and enrich our program.
  • Feel a sense of ownership and investment that helps build our strong sense of community.
  • Boost the school’s image within their own communities.
  • Are valued by the school.  Each spring, all volunteers are invited to the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon where the school thanks and celebrates volunteer involvement and achievement

WHERE?

Many volunteer activities take place on or around campus; however, it is also possible to volunteer from your home, or your place of work.

WHEN?

There are numerous opportunities throughout the school year for involvement to suit your schedule. You can volunteer during the day, the evening, or the weekend. You can volunteer once a week, once a month, or once a term – whatever suits your schedule.

WHAT?

There are numerous opportunities to volunteer at Appleby.  Some of the Appleby programs and organizations that require volunteer support include:

Academic Programs: Volunteers can get involved with a number of academic programs throughout the year, by acting as judges for the Middle School science fair, as debating and public speaking judges, and presenting at career night.  Positions available…

Appleby College Parents’ Association (ACPA) and ACPA Executive Committee: The ACPA includes all parents and guardians of current and alumni students of Appleby College. Founded by Lady Edith Baillie in 1928, the role of the Association has been “to take an active interest in the comfort and well-being of our students through cooperation with the Principal.” The ACPA relies on volunteers to help staff numerous fundraising events that benefit Appleby.  The ACPA also includes The Chapel Guild, a fun group of volunteer parents who meet monthly to care for and decorate the John Bell Chapel. Positions available…

Admissions Office: The Admissions Office requires volunteers to act as host families and to be involved with events such as Open Houses, which introduce new and prospective families to the school. The Admissions Office also travels extensively, and seeks alumni and parent homes to host receptions for prospective families. Positions available…

Parent/Community Relations: The school relies on current and former Appleby parents to help welcome new families to our community and help them get oriented.  As a member of the New Parent Committee, you can act as a new parent buddy to a handful of new parents each year, and assist them in their transition to the Appleby culture.  We also run a number of cultural events over the course of the year to celebrate our diverse community, and parents are encouraged to participate in the planning and execution of these events.  We also look to parents to help welcome visiting students to our community by offering billeting as required. Positions available…

Advancement Department: The Advancement Department partners with volunteers to coordinates The Appleby Fund annual appeal, the Gala Auction, fundraising for capital projects and student philanthropy through the student-run foundation Kids4Kids. Volunteers can get involved in a wide variety of ways including the provision of cultural sensitivity training, hosting local events and delivering presentations. Positions available…

Arts Programs: Appleby’s arts program includes drama, visual arts, music and dance. Volunteers are needed each year to help with school plays, in both technical theatre and costuming. Parents may also billet incoming arts groups, coordinate music, and promote and sell tickets to various arts events. Positions available…

Service Program: The service program calls on volunteers to help with a number of initiatives, including Fall In and Spring Forward, Appleby’s Annual Walkathon, While You Were Out service days, and the ECO Club’s environmental projects.  Positions available…

HOW?

Volunteer enrollment is easily done on-line by using the Volunteer Enrolment Form.  Once completed, your name will then be passed to the individual responsible for coordinating each activity who will contact you with more information.  For further information on the process please e-mail our parent Volunteer Coordinator Anne Marie Bianchi Tsokov or contact any member of the ACPA Executive.

Important: Please note that Appleby College requires all volunteers to have a Criminal Record Check (CRC) completed (also known as Police Screening or Security Clearance Check). CRCs must be completed before volunteering begins and all volunteers must obtain this clearance on their own.  To continue volunteering, Appleby requires a current CRC to be completed every three years. In addition the Declaration Re Criminal Record, must be completed each year during the application process.

Thanks for volunteering!
