Guy joined Appleby in 1971, teaching Latin, English and Math in Junior School. He went on to hold numerous positions, including a number of leadership roles such as head of English, director of athletics for Junior School, assistant director of Junior School and director of studies, before taking on the role of Headmaster (now Principal) in 1987.
Throughout his 25 year tenure as Principal of Appleby, Guy’s vision and strategic direction inspired innovation and improvement. His achievements are many and include the introduction of co-education, increased diversification of the student body, implementation of technology and programs with an e-school culture, and the launch of the Appleby College Diploma with Distinction in Global Leadership, the first truly integrated global education program offered by a North American boarding school.
Appleby’s position as one of Canada’s leading independent schools is in large part due to Guy McLean’s vision, leadership and commitment to innovation.
The Appleby community is enormously grateful, and expresses its deep and sincere appreciation for the unceasing dedication and commitment Guy and his wife, Joanne, have provided to the school over the past 41 years.
