David Marshall "Skin" Dewar

David Marshall "Skin" Dewar was a graduate of Upper Canada College and Trinity College at the University of Toronto. A natural athlete who was skilled in every major sport, David played Varsity Football and Hockey during his undergraduate years and earned his 'T’, with an award of merit. In 1933 David accepted an invitation to coach the Budapest Skating Club's hockey team, which was in effect Hungary's national team. David was a faculty member at Appleby from 1934-1974, he taught English and coached first teams in football, hockey and cricket; he also introduced new techniques, especially in football, and in 1934 and 1959 the First Football teams had undefeated seasons. David held various administrative positions at Appleby: Department Head of English, Assistant Headmaster; Housemaster of Powell's (1937-60); Registrar, and Director of Junior School. In addition to teaching, David served as a Lieutenant in the army during the Second World War and was the alumni grandparent of Will DesRoches '96 and Christie DesRoches '01; uncle to Michael Smith '56, Peter Dewar '68, and John Dewar '66.
