Would you recommend this school to anyone who wants to be a future doctor?
The school has a strong academic curriculum, especially in the sciences, which is supported by excellent teachers, outstanding lab facilities, and numerous opportunities to experience a profession in medicine. The science classes take place in labs where learning happens through hands-on experimentation -- one of my favourite classes was exploring the respiratory and digestive systems by dissecting a fetal pig. Students receive many opportunities to experience what it’s like in the field, volunteering in placements at health centres, or competing in regional science fairs. You could even spend a day with a surgeon at Trillium Hospital. I am thoroughly impressed with the training I have received, and wouldn't hesitate recommending it for prospective students seeking a career in medicine.

I heard that students have to go to Chapel every day. How is it?
The whole atmosphere and tradition of the John Bell Chapel is unique and amazing. The recently-added organs and window called Iggalaaq are even more beautiful and extraordinary. Regardless of grade, all Appleby students have an opportunity to contemplate and sing hymns every morning as part of the Chapel tradition. It is certainly a great way to start a day. Another great thing about the John Bell Chapel is that it does not promote solely one religion or faith. Instead, it is welcoming to every religion/faith that Appleby students represent. Each grade is also given a chance to organize its own Chapel week, which makes Chapel more fun. The John Bell Chapel truly embraces everyone regardless of grade, race, nationality or religion.

How is the experience living on campus?
This is my forth year boarding at Appleby College, it has been a lot of fun living on campus. I've met so many people from all around the world, and the school has provided us different programs and activities on the weekends. Boarding has also taught me to be more independent. I have also learned to be more confident and I believe that has changed since I first came when I was in Grade 9.
- Tiffany, Senior Two (Grade 12)

I was wondering if you would be able to tell me what you like most about the school.
Living in boarding has been one of the best experiences I have ever had at Appleby. The friendships you make in house are ones that you probably wouldn’t have made otherwise, but now that you have made these friendships, you feel like you would be missing them by not having them in your life. Not only do you become close with people in your house or in your grade, you also become close and make many bonds with the whole boarding community. There are many outings and events on weekends that the school puts on for the students to create interaction and it also allows the students to go on day trips to get a break from boarding life. All in all, Appleby College is a great school to attend and the memories and friendships that you create here will last you a lifetime. If you are looking for something different with a challenge, Appleby is the right place for you.

I already go to a school you regularly play against in sports competitions. If I went to Appleby, do you think it would be hard for me to fit in, seeing as I previously went to a school rival?
One of the great things about Appleby is that there are students here from all walks of life, and from all different previous schools around the world. Because of this diversity, Appleby is a very accepting community. School rivals are only seen as a positive thing here as it is only out of pride for our school. It would never negatively influence anyone fitting in. We would absolutely love to have anyone that benefits an aspect of Appleby, regardless of what school they come from!

I live in Etobicoke. Will the transition to Oakville be difficult?
Absolutely not. The first few weeks might be a bit of a challenge but you get used to it. With the new bus route, the logistics are very good. I can only assume that the school will keep on improving the bus schedule so that it is convenient for you and for everyone on the bus. Depending on what sport you decide to take part in, you could be waiting for up to an hour for the bus to come at six, but over the years I have learnt that this time can be very well spent working in the library, talking to your friends in the Muskoka chairs, or whatever else you choose to do. If you are worried about not getting all your homework done, don't worry because you can always work after school or on the bus. The truth is that I have come to love the time I spend on the bus. You get very close to everyone and I will honestly miss it next year when I board.

What are the community service placements like?
I had numerous services opportunities but the one that taught me the most was the trip to one of the Scott Missions. As a part of the Upper School Service council I had the opportunity to play clarinet with a few other friends. We had our own band and we performed in front of homeless people. Although some of the crowd weren’t paying attention, those who were paying attention seemed to be enjoying the performance. This was very special for me because I leaned that I actually can benefit society directly. This service opportunity wasn’t just paying money to support one place, it required me to be directly involved in it, and that is why I loved it.
- Mark, Senior One (Grade 11)

I want to play in a band – Can I?
I play the clarinet. The music experience at Appleby is incredible. Appleby always challenges you to develop you artistic skills through Cabaret and Living Arts Centre performances. I feel that my clarinet skills have improved drastically over my four year career at Appleby. I love performing with my U2 Jazz band and I can’t wait until I join the senior jazz band.

What does Appleby do to prepare you for university?
I definitely feel that being an Appleby student is preparing me for university. Many of my peers in other schools are unsure about what to do in university, but since we are offered so much and have experienced such a variety of things at Appleby, I feel that I have a good understanding of what I enjoy and what I am good at. Also, the guidance program is great when I am unsure about something. The counsellors are friendly and really know their stuff!

What are the English classes like?
Every day in Dr. Adams’ English class is one that I will never forget. He comes with new ideas and new ways of making Othello, the Wars, and the Great Gatsby interesting and funny to read and learn about. Our debates run on heated discussions between him and our fellow students as we compete for the best debate. English is like an adventure everyday of your life.
- Kori, Senior Two (Grade 12)

What’s it like going up north?
I have had two trips to the Northern Campus so far. The canoe trip was an experience I’ll never forget. I loved every minute of it, with my existing friendships getting stronger and building brand new ones with people I never knew. The winter trip was also amazing, and it tested my limits in a completely different way. I plan on going to the Northern Campus as much as possible in the rest of my Appleby career.
- Nick, Senior One (Grade 11)

How do you get into the leadership positions?
I was the captain of U16 Squash last year, and it was really fun and new. I think Appleby helps to start at small positions and build to bigger ones, because I am a S1 Home Form Leader this year, and hope to go further to be a prefect. I think by making them graduated steps it makes it feel natural.
- Nick, Senior One (Grade 11)

Is it easy to make new friends?
Yes, it was very easy for me to make friends here. The Appleby community is very open with each other and welcomes everyone readily. During my first school year at Appleby, I have been able to meet a diverse range of people. Through my friendships, I have met people which I will continue to see even after I graduate from Appleby. The friends I have made here truly have helped me experience the Appleby lifestyle.
- Omar, Senior Two (Grade 12)

What kind of sports can I play?
Last year I played basketball, volleyball and softball. I would have to say the main thing I love about sports at Appleby is that the whole team works together no one is left out. There are always those who support the team and bring everyone together whether it is counting when you are stretching, helping by giving tips to improve the player’s position or just having good laughs. Sports are an amazing and fun part of Appleby.
