Welcome to the Appleby College Academy! All students are welcome to join us on-campus or online in 2023, for an exciting array of credit courses. The Appleby College Academy offers academically rigorous and thought-provoking courses, with small class sizes and creative and engaging teachers.
SUMMER CREDIT COURSES
All students are welcome to join the Appleby College Summer Academy. We offer a selection of credit courses, from grades 9 to 12, both online and on-campus. Our fast paced summer courses offer students an opportunity to reach ahead with engaging lessons, and passionate and dedicated teachers.
We offer small class sizes of no more than 15 students. This ensures that each student has ample one-on-one time with the teacher to make sure their learning needs are met.
Class hours vary depending on the subject and are tailored to the different subjects. Please review the subject specific information below.
Students are expected to have access to a personal computer or tablet, and internet access to participate in the course.
The deadlines to drop a course without the credit appearing a student's transcript will be July 21 for the July session, and August 18 for the August session.
Limited boarding spaces are available for on-campus courses. Please contact academy@appleby.on.ca for more information.

MATHEMATICS 9 | MTH1W | ONLINE |
---|
This course enables students to consolidate, and continue to develop, an understanding of mathematical concepts related to number sense and operations, algebra, measurement, geometry, data, probability, and financial literacy. Students will use mathematical processes, mathematical modelling, and coding to make sense of the mathematics they are learning and to apply their understanding to culturally responsive and relevant real-world situations. Students will continue to enhance their mathematical reasoning skills, including proportional reasoning, spatial reasoning, and algebraic reasoning, as they solve problems and communicate their thinking. This course will take place during the month of July and the delivery of the course material relies on technology to establish a live daily connection between the teacher and the students. Students will work in groups or as a whole class interacting with the teacher and their peers using text, audio, video and screen sharing. This live correspondence will take place in the mornings (Eastern Daylight Time), from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Students will continue with their independent work for 2 hours daily after their online time using the shared OneNote Binders, with access to video solutions from Appleby teachers and asynchronous chat with students and faculty. Feedback on homework is provided by the teacher as students work their way through the curriculum.

PRINCIPLES OF MATHEMATICS 10 | MPM2D | ONLINE |
This course enables students to broaden their understanding of mathematical relationships and extend their problem solving and algebraic skills through investigation, the effective use of technology and abstract reasoning. Students will explore the quadratic relations and their application, solve and apply linear systems, investigate and apply analytic geometry to problems, and investigate the trigonometry of right angled triangles and non-right triangles and their applications. Students will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step problems. This course will take place during the month of August and the delivery of the course material relies on technology to establish a live daily connection between the teacher and the students. FUNCTIONS 11 | MCR3U | ON-CAMPUS |
This course introduces the mathematical concept of the function by extending students’ experiences with linear and quadratic relations. Students will investigate properties of discrete and continuous functions, including trigonometric and exponential functions; represent functions numerically, algebraically, and graphically; solve problems involving applications of functions; investigate inverse functions; and develop facility in determining equivalent algebraic expressions. Students will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step problems. This course will take place during the month of July, on-campus and students will be expected to attend class in person each day.
|
ADVANCED FUNCTIONS 12 | MHF4U | ON-CAMPUS |
This course extends students’ experience with functions. Students will investigate the properties of polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions; develop techniques for combining functions; broaden their understanding of rates of change; and develop facility in applying these concepts and skills. Students will also refine their use of the mathematical processes necessary for success in senior mathematics. This course is intended both for students taking the Calculus and Vectors course as a prerequisite for a university program and for those wishing to consolidate their understanding of mathematics before proceeding to any one of a variety of university programs. This course will take place during the month of July, on-campus, and students will be expected to attend class in person each day.

MATHEMATICS OF DATA MANAGEMENT 12 | MDM4U | ONLINE |
This course broadens students’ understanding of mathematics as it relates to managing data. Students will apply methods for organizing and analysing large amounts of information; solve problems involving probability and statistics; and carry out a culminating investigation that integrates statistical concepts and skills. Students will also refine their use of the mathematical processes necessary for success in senior mathematics. Students planning to enter university programs in business, the social sciences, and the humanities will find this course of particular interest. This course will take place during the month of July, and the delivery of the course material relies on technology to establish a live daily connection between the teacher and the students. Students will work in groups or as a whole class interacting with the teacher and their peers using text, audio, video and screen sharing. This live correspondence will take place in the mornings (Eastern Daylight Time), from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. Students will continue with their independent work for 4 hours daily after their online time using the shared OneNote Binders, with access to video solutions from Appleby teachers and asynchronous chat with students and faculty. Feedback on homework is provided by the teacher as students work their way through the curriculum.

CORE FRENCH 10 | FSF2D | ONLINE |
This course provides opportunities for students to communicate in French about personally relevant, familiar, and academic topics in real-life situations with increasing independence. Students will exchange information, ideas, and opinions with others in guided and increasingly spontaneous spoken interactions. Students will continue to develop their language, knowledge and skills through the selective use of strategies that contribute to effective communication. Students will also increase their understanding and appreciation of diverse French-speaking communities, and will develop skills necessary for lifelong language learning. This course will take place in the month of July. Using an online conversation & collaboration system, students will work in groups or as a whole class interacting with the teacher and their peers using text, audio, video and screen sharing. Activities such as listening, reading and speaking are part of the daily meetings. This live correspondence will usually take place in the mornings (Eastern Daylight Time), from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and students will continue with their independent work for 2 hours daily after their online time using the shared OneNote Binders. Feedback on homework is provided by the teacher as students work their way through the curriculum.
