Summer and Preparing for the New School Year While students and faculty are in the early stages of enjoying their summer vacation, the campus continues to be a very active place as summer is a busy time on campus with more than 6,000 campers and summer program participants involved in a variety of activities. Summer is also a very busy construction period at the school. In addition to continued major work on the new A.W.B. Alumni Centre for Athletics and Student Life, a number of other upgrades and enhancements are being undertaken. With a full summer ahead, it's hard to believe that September, and the start of school, is just a couple of months away. For those parents who are new to the Appleby College community, welcome to the summer edition of Appleby This Week (ATW). ATW is the school's main mode of correspondence with parents and host families and is the best way for you to stay informed about life at Appleby and upcoming events. The summer edition of ATW is one of our most important as it contains information regarding orientation for both day and boarding students, details about the New Parent and Host Family Orientation, as well as information on Appleby's school uniform, summer English course reading, and documentation deadlines. New students and parents are encouraged to take a moment to view a special video message included in this issue from Michael Moores, coordinator, orientation program and director, Senior School on what your child can look forward to as a new Appleby student. Please take a few minutes to review this edition. You can also expect to receive a similar follow-up issue in mid-August to remind you of the various upcoming events and activities. The first issue of ATW for the 2019-2020 school year will be distributed on Monday, September 2. Have a wonderful relaxing summer, and we look forward to seeing you in September. Innes van Nostrand, Principal & Katrina Samson, Head of School Current E-mail Addresses Appleby This Week (ATW) is sent to all e-mail addresses the school has on file. Outdoor Education Fall 2019 Appleby's Outdoor Education program introduces and immerses our students into a total experiential learning environment. Leadership and outdoor education are key components of the experience-based curriculum that enrich our student body, faculty and community. Vital life skills such as self-confidence, understanding relationships, personal growth and a dedicated responsibility toward our local and global communities are developed by using the medium of the out-of-doors. Challenging our students in settings and situations inherent to the program's activities provides the opportunities to practice these skills under the guidance of qualified instructors. Activities include canoe tripping, wilderness living and navigation, leadership training, and environmental awareness.
