Over the past year, I’ve had the tremendous pleasure of connecting with Appleby College families both on campus and around the world. From community events in Barbados to alumni networking gatherings in Toronto, and from social events in Los Angeles to meeting with alumni, current, and future Appleby families in China and Vietnam — one thing has remained constant: the strength and pride of our community. No matter where I go, it’s inspiring to see the deep connection and shared passion that unites us all as part of the Appleby family. As warmer weather approaches, we naturally start thinking ahead to the end of the school year and the exciting summer months. With that comes a particularly meaningful milestone — the graduation of the Class of 2025. While their time as Appleby students may be drawing to a close, their life-long journey as part of the Appleby alumni community is just beginning. No matter where life takes them, they’ll always have a global network of alumni to turn to — for guidance, support, shared memories, or simply a friendly face. I’m especially excited about upcoming opportunities to connect with our alumni. In May, we’ll gather for the London, UK Alumni Social, and before we know it, Homecoming in October will be upon us — another wonderful chance to reconnect, reminisce, and revisit our shared Appleby experience. I look forward to hearing your stories, building new connections, and strengthening the bonds that make our community so special — wherever in the world you may be. Jude Alexander
For the past 50 years, the Appleby College Archives have preserved and documented the ongoing story of the school. As the keeper of Appleby’s institutional memory since 1974, we look forward to celebrating this milestone anniversary by sharing Appleby historical facts, trivia, and more throughout the year in Alumni Ties. DID YOU KNOW- 2025 marks 40 years since the passing of school cook Hilda Cattaway. As noted on the plaque outside of the Hilda Chattaway Servery, Hilda joined Appleby as the school cook in 1929 and for the next 56 years she was a beloved member of the Appleby community. Known for her roasts and apple pies, Hilda prepared approximately 800 meals a day for students, faculty and staff, and during her tenure created a 'home away from home' for the boys who attended the school. "Service, strength and beauty were the keys to her character: service in her daily life at the College; strength of spirit, heart and faith; and beauty in her warm and generous spirit." (Appleby Quarterly, July 1985)
