Appleby College Uniform Expectations
Today, Monday, September 11, 2023 is the start of regular school days. All students are required to be in first dress uniform for our opening assembly, Tie Ceremonies, and introduction to classes. A "first dress" Appleby uniform includes an Appleby school blazer, plain white or solid light blue dress shirt, Appleby tie, grey pants or Appleby kilt, and black, navy blue or dark grey socks with pants, or navy blue knee-high socks or plain navy blue opaque tights (no patterns, no sheer nylons) with a kilt. New students receive a tie on the first day of classes and do not need to purchase one prior to the start of school.
On Tuesday, September 12, 2023 up until the Thanksgiving long weekend students have the option to wear the first dress uniform, or the white Appleby crested polo shirt with or without the Appleby ¼ zip crested sweater as a warmer weather uniform. Following the Thanksgiving long weekend, and until the May long weekend, students are required to wear the first dress uniform. Following the May long weekend until the end of school in June, students again may choose to wear the warmer weather uniform.
Students should be leaving the house in proper uniform and arriving to school in proper uniform. Hooded sweatshirts (even ones with an Appleby logo), jeans, athletic wear, running shoes (even if they are black) are not permitted during the school day unless there is a very special circumstance involving a travelling team or another specific event. Clubs and Co-Curricualrs
For co-curriculars this September, all Upper and Senior School students will begin today, Monday, September 11, 2023. Students who plan to participate in an athletic co-curricular should come prepared with their Appleby athletic clothes and running shoes. Middle School students will meet with Rebecca Richardson, director, athletics and Sara Joy, director, arts, during their co-curricular period on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 to learn about co-curricular options, ask questions, and then join the group for the selection process. Students should come prepared with their Appleby athletic clothes and running shoes.
We're also excited to share an exciting change in our school's club selection process! Students have the opportunity to choose three or more clubs of interest without the need for ranking them in a specific order. This new approach reflects our commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive club environment, where students can freely explore their interests and discover new passions. It is our hope that every student is assigned to one or two of their selected clubs, based on whether the club runs on a half-year or full-year schedule. We anticipate this change will encourage everyone to try new activities and fully engage in the vibrant club culture our school has to offer. Students can expect to sign-up for clubs this month.
Requests for Co-curricular Exemptions for 2023-2024
Students in Upper One, Upper Two, and Senior Two may apply for an exemption from co-curricular programming for one term, or one day per week to pursue high-level external programming. If Appleby offers this programming, students must also “play” for Appleby in that year.
Continuing with changes to the co-curricular passport to enhance flexibility and choice for students, we will continue to offer Senior One students the option to take one term off co-curriculars, reducing the original three term requirement to two co-curriculars over three terms. To be eligible for this term off, students must sign up by Tuesday, September 12, 2023.
This year, Senior Two students must complete three terms of co-curricular but are no longer expected to complete the one athletic requirement in this school year. They must have met their Arts/Service requirement by graduation.
All exemption requests should be entered here and will be reviewed by Dr. Claire Kelly, Assistant Head of School, Student Life, for consideration and approval.
Please note: Requests for exemption for Reporting Period One and Reporting Period Two must be submitted by Tuesday, September 12, 2023; Reporting Period Three requests will be due in January 2024.

Additional cohort time, design-based events or excursions, and an exciting immersive experience will complement the weekly club. In addition to design thinking methods, students will explore futures thinking and using AI in creative problem-solving. Students who complete the first cohort will be presented with a digital certificate and the opportunity to continue within the program come their Senior One year. New Policies in Effect
In preparation for the new school year, please review the following policies regarding food delivery, student cell phone usage, and laptops/tablets in the Schlesinger Dining Hall which are also reflected in the Code of Conduct. Thank you for your support.
Food Delivery Policy
- Food deliveries for students are not permitted to campus during the academic week – Monday to Friday. This includes (and is not limited to) food delivery services such as Uber Eats, Skip the Dishes, and DoorDash. Ordering food presents a safety concern with unknown adult contacts. It can also disrupt students’ learning and attendance. Additionally, ordering food does not support the school’s goals around sustainability and regeneration, adding waste and adding to our carbon footprint as a community. Sodexo offers a wide range of healthy meals and snacks throughout the school day, and students may purchase additional snacks from the College Shop. As a school, we will explore offering additional food and beverages on campus to accommodate students’ dietary preferences. If students have questions about this change, they can speak to their School Director or a Sustainability and Regeneration Director.
Cell Phone Policy - Expectations for Student Cell Phone Use
- Appleby students are to leave their cell phones in their bag, blazer or locker (out of sight) during classes, co-curriculars, clubs, community times/assemblies and lunches. Of course, there will be exceptions – for example, if a faculty member has given permission for a cell phone to be used for an academic purpose in class, or if a student is responsible for media creation and official posts on behalf of Appleby. The purpose behind this rule is to limit distractions from the learning experience and promote a respectful learning environment. Students will be asked to put away their phones if they are using them without permission and as always should be striving to uphold the school’s core ethical values. Students who are unable to respect these parameters may have their phones delivered to the appropriate School Director and returned at the end of the day, following a conversation. Should parents need to contact their child immediately for an emergency, they are to call main reception at 905-845-4681 ext. 200 and the administration team will contact the child and have them call home.
Laptops/Tablets in the Schlesinger Dining Hall
- Laptops and tablets are prohibited in the Dining Hall during all lunch periods, or at any other location or time when food is being consumed. The rationale behind this includes and is not limited to, encouraging our students to develop positive social skills, positive interactions with peers, and prevent food damage to the devices.
