Recently at the Alumni Leaders Forum, I had the opportunity to share some key academic program updates, and I think it makes sense to share them more broadly with the alumni community as well. When you think about the core programs at Appleby College, academics, athletics, arts, service, and boarding life likely come to mind first. From there, you might also think of other key experiences like Chapel, Temagami, and Global Experiential trips, etc. At Appleby, we manage all these core elements really well, and we continue to refine and focus on the core as the foundation of an Appleby education. Yet, to remain relevant and competitive as a school we need to continually evolve and look for opportunities to innovate. We recently introduced the Diploma of Distinction program which gives students the opportunity (through a combination of courses, co-curriculars, clubs, and external requirements) to earn a specialized diploma on top of their Appleby Diploma in the areas of Global Leadership, Creative Arts Leadership, STEM Leadership, and Business Leadership. I am excited to announce that we had our first cohort graduate at this year’s Graduation Day ceremony having earned these specialized Diplomas of Distinction. Another adjacent program is our new Appleby Internship program which provides interested Senior One students with the opportunity to pursue a minimum 2-week internship experience over the summer working with a community business partner, either locally or internationally. If you are interested in hosting an Appleby student in the future and providing some valuable work experience, please reach out as we continue to seek alumni support in this area. In June 2026 we will be running our first Immersive program for Midde One to Senior One students which will provide a weeklong experiential program, outside of their typical core experience, connected to a specific area of interest that encourages curiosity, creativity, and risk-taking. These programs will be immersive, day-long experiences serving as extensions to the core curriculum while empowering students to dive deep into experiences that inspire them. In preparation, I’m excited to share that we recently concluded a two-day Immersive pilot with great success that included sessions on fishing, architecture, cooking, sound engineering, and debating. Finally, there is no question that as we seek out innovation and future opportunities for growth we must ensure we pay attention to the rapidly changing world of Artificial Intelligence. By investing in AI literacy, we will empower our community to harness the potential of technology ethically and creatively. We are committed to fostering critical thinkers who understand the impact of AI on society, can navigate its complexities, and innovate with purpose. AI literacy involves not only technical knowledge of algorithms and data but also an awareness of ethical considerations, societal impacts, and the ways in which AI can be harnessed to solve real-world problems. There is a balance in our approach as we navigate the use of AI across our platforms while recognizing the ethical and sustainable impacts, alongside the need to provide safeguards for young students. As you can see, there is a lot going on and we are continuing to evolve, while also staying true to our core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, and compassion. As always, I encourage you to connect, come by the school, find a way to get involved, or simply think of Appleby fondly as you reminisce about your own experiences and the friendships and connections that you made. Always a Blue Dog!
For the past 50 years, the Appleby College Archives have preserved and documented the ongoing story of the school. As the keeper of Appleby’s institutional memory since 1974, we look forward to celebrating this milestone anniversary by sharing Appleby historical facts, trivia, and more throughout the year in Alumni Ties. DID YOU KNOW- In his first year at Appleby College, Headmaster Ned Larsen changed the format of Closing Day. On June 11, 1969, the first 'Closing Day' in the new style was held, honouring the graduating class. To give the graduating class a special day of their own, Sports Day and Academic Prize Giving ceremonies were separated, with Academic Prize Giving moved to be part of the official Closing Day Ceremony. Sports Day was held on May 16, 1969 instead. The Honourable John N. Turner, Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of Canada was the guest speaker at the 1969 Closing Day.
