Students and Faculty Return From Guatemala Global Experiential Trip
From November 25 to December 7, 11 students and three staff members travelled to Guatemala to learn about food systems and cultural identity. Students explored the themes of forest and water in San Lucas Tolimán through hiking, permaculture, fish farming and honey production site visits with local farmers. The group also experienced the Guatemalan way of life through homestay opportunities with local families in San Juan La Laguna where they practiced their Spanish, helped cook meals, and attended special events such as graduations and a wedding! Students visited cooperatives to learn about local weaving, herbal medicine and Guatemalan coffee, and helped create a pollination garden from native seed banks at Kukal Juana International School. A basketball game against a local team was definitely a trip highlight, along with a Mayan cooking class and visit to a temazcal for healing. Students wrapped up the trip in Antigua where they appreciated local art and architecture and enjoyed a final sunset over volcanoes. Gracias por todo, Guatemala!

After a quick flight to Cartagena, the group learned about the colonial history of the city and had the opportunity to visit the first officially free town of the Americas, San Basilio de Palenque. Students were able to engage in meaningful activities in both Getsemani and Barú before their return back to Canada.
