Parent-Teacher Conferences - Booking Closes Thursday, April 4
On Tuesday, April 9, 2024 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. EDT and Friday, April 12, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. EDT, Appleby will be hosting online Parent-Teacher Conferences via Zoom. We encourage parents to view your child’s RP2 report card to review your child's progress, where they are doing well, and where there might be opportunity for improvement.
Again this year, Appleby is using a scheduling system called PickaTime for Parent-Teacher Conference sign-up. To access the scheduler, please login to BBK12 with your Blackbaud ID. Click here to access BBK12.
After logging into BBK12, navigate to the Resource Board and click on the Parent-Teacher Conference Sign-up resource tile. You will then be automatically logged into the scheduling system and be able to start making your appointment selections. Once you have completed your selections, you will receive an e-mail confirmation including a summary of bookings and Zoom meeting links. To ensure that everyone has an opportunity to meet with their child's teachers, Parent-Teacher Conferences will be scheduled in seven-minute slots.
Your child’s RP2 report card, which includes teacher feedback on learning skills and course progress, was e-mailed to parents on Friday, March 8, 2024, click here to view. You are encouraged to read your child’s report and in particular the teacher comments prior to your Parent-Teacher Conferences. In the event you cannot attend the online Parent-Teacher Conferences, please don't hesitate to contact your child's teachers by e-mail with any questions after you have read through your child’s report card.
Parent-Teacher interview bookings will close on Thursday, April 4, 2024.
Students Must Use Access Card/Fob to Enter Buildings on Campus
Over the past several months there have been repeated instances of students pulling on the handles of the A.W.B. Alumni Centre for Athletics and Student Life exterior doors (instead of using their access card or fob) in an effort to force them open. The excessive force being used has resulted in the door handles breaking off. This type of behaviour must stop. In future, any student damaging a door in this manner will be subject to disciplinary matters and the cost of repairing the door will be applied to their student account.

Increased Global Measles Activity
Halton Region Public Health would like to alert families to the global rise in measles. Please click here to view a letter to parents and guardians. To help mitigate the impact of potential future measles cases in school settings, you are strongly encouraged to have a record of your measles containing vaccine(s) and ensure that other immunizations are also up to date. In the event of a measles case in a school setting, employees and parents/guardians of students would be contacted to request measles immunization information if it is not already reported to Halton Region Public Health.
In the event of a case of measles in a school setting, the following students, employees and volunteers would be excluded from school for 21 days after their last exposure to the case:
Students
- Anyone up to 18 years of age who does not have documented proof of two doses of measles-containing vaccine.
- Anyone who has not received a measles-containing vaccine despite having a medical or philosophical exemption.
Employees and Volunteers
- Anyone 18 years of age and older born in or after 1970 who does not have documented proof of two doses of measles-containing vaccine or who does not have documented proof of immunity through blood work. Anyone born in 1969 or earlier would not be excluded as they are generally considered immune.

This Week’s Co-curricular Programming and Bussing
Spring Term co-curriculars begin on Tuesday, March 26, 2024. Students should return this day expecting to sign-up and, if trying out for a competitive team, practice. Co-curriculars will run Wednesday, March 27, 2024; there will be no co-curriculars on Thursday, March 28, 2024 as the Spring Long Weekend begins and the busses will depart at 4:00 p.m. only.

Annually, the school looks to build a strong pool of candidates for both the Appleby College Board of Governors and the Appleby College Foundation Board of Trustees. Members of the Appleby community who have suggestions for candidates or who themselves are interested in serving are encouraged to submit expressions of interest for consideration by e-mailing governance@appleby.on.ca.
COMPASS Health & Wellness Survey
Appleby will be participating in the COMPASS Health & Wellness Survey through the University of Waterloo again this year. Students will be completing the survey on Wednesday, March 27, 2024. This is our 12th year participating in the survey which will assist us in growing and improving the effectiveness of Appleby's health and wellness curriculum. All students in Middle One through Senior Two will complete the survey which will be conducted online again this year.
The survey results will be kept confidential so that individual students cannot be identified. All responses will be grouped to identify health behaviour trends in the Appleby student population and used to help plan and evaluate future health and wellness programming and services for students to access at school. Please review the parent information letter which provides additional details about the study. If you have any questions about COMPASS, please contact Mary Brajkovic, director of wellness. There are no known or anticipated risks to participation in this survey. April Bus Schedule Adjustments
On Wednesday, April 3, 2024 Appleby's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) Day will take place, and there will be one bus at departing 4:00 p.m. Due to Parent-Teacher interviews, on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 there will be one bus departing at 4:00 p.m., and Friday, April 12, 2024 is an asynchronous day for all Appleby students and none will be running.
Calling All Parent Volunteers - 2nd Annual DEIB Cultural Exhibit on April 3!
We're excited to invite Appleby parents to participate in the upcoming Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Day Cultural Exhibit on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. This is a chance to showcase your family's heritage and represent your country with pride! Parents are encouraged to sign-up by clicking here to host a booth at the fair for students and employees with displays of traditional dress, authentic wares, and engaging activities.
The main event will take place during lunch, and attendees will have the chance to explore the diverse array of booths and learn about different cultures firsthand. And for those parents who can stay a bit longer, we invite you to join us for an afternoon of immersive cultural exchange. You'll have the chance to engage with a smaller group of students, teaching them about your culture and country in a more intimate setting.

Senior One Leadership Workshop - Friday, April 5
Senior One students are invited to attend a Leadership Workshop on Friday, April 5, 2024 from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. This is a must-attend event for those applying for Senior Two leadership roles. Participants will enjoy leadership activities, learn more about the process of applying for leadership, and have an opportunity to practice interview skills with current Senior Two leaders. A sign-up form will be sent directly to Senior One students.
Solar Eclipse Viewing
On Monday, April 8, 2024 a solar eclipse is scheduled to track across the region starting at 2:05 p.m., with the total eclipse occurring at 3:19 p.m. Appleby will be open, however, there will be no co-curriculars and only one bus departing at 4:05 p.m.
The science department has developed programming for anyone who wishes to view the solar eclipse. Block D (2:35 - 3:50 p.m.) teachers have the option to bring their class outdoors to East Field and attend a Solar Eclipse Viewing Event. Mandatory safety glasses will be provided to each attendee and a telescope (with solar filter) will be available for viewing. Temperature sensors, light intensity sensors, and wind sensors will also be set-up and connected to monitors so attendees can view changes throughout the eclipse. Parents and guardians received the required permission form via e-mail through ParentPaperwork. Upper One Debating Competition - Judges Needed
The Upper One Debating Competition will take place on Thursday, April 11, 2024 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. The top Upper One debaters from each class will compete in two rounds and parent judges are needed for this entertaining event. No judging experience is necessary, and faculty members will be present to assist. Coffee and treats will be provided. This is a wonderful opportunity to see some great debaters and mix and mingle with fellow parents. Middle School Vaccine Clinic Through the Halton Public Health Department
The Halton Public Health Department will be coming to Appleby on Monday, April 22, 2024 to provide the second school-based vaccine clinic for Middle School students. Public health nurses will provide the second round of vaccinations for Middle One students and catch-up for Middle Two students who have not completed their school-based vaccination series. The vaccine clinic will take place in the Old Gym. Middle School classes will be called down during the day to attend.
A friendly reminder, new consent forms do not need to be submitted. If parents wish to verify, update or revoke consent, please call 311 or 905-825-6000 to speak with the Halton Vaccination Services team. For more details, please click here.

2023 Childcare Receipts and T2202 Tuition and Enrolment Certificates for eligible students are available on Appleby’s education management system – BBK12. To access BBK12 please click here. Middle Two Presentations of Learning – Information Session
The Middle Two Presentations of Learning (POL) are a culminating event celebrating academic and personal growth as students finish Middle School. On January 22, Middle School students listened to a presentation in Grade Band about the POL process. Click here to view the presentation. Beginning in June, Middle Two students will have an opportunity to share their presentations with peers, teachers, parents, guardians, and evaluating panelists consisting of Appleby faculty.
The POL preparation will occur as a unit of study starting on Monday, May 6, 2024. Students will be assigned a POL faculty mentor and will work on their POL during the academic day in their English and Social Science classes. Students will participate in a series of workshops, led by members of school leadership, former Middle Two students, and faculty.

Appleby Swim Team Wins Medals at OFSAA!
Appleby's Swim team had a very successful performance at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championship! Our Blue Dogs had one of the greatest victories in the history of the team, capturing first place in the Senior Boys' division. Also, the following incredible individual accomplishments were earned:
- Bronze Medal in the Senior Girls' Medley Relay (Rebekah King, Elisha Lam, Lauren Snyder and Renee Xia)
- Silver Medal in the Senior Boys' 50 Free (Henry Shang)
- Gold Medal in the Senior Boys' 100 Breast (HB Jiang)
- Gold Medal in the Senior Boys' 100 Free (David Sharpe)
- Gold Medal in the Senior Boys' Medley Relay (HB Jiang, Henry Shang, David Sharpe and Dylan Sharpe)

Upper One French Students Watch the Film Ru
On March 1, Upper One Core French students attended the movie Ru, which is based on the best selling autobiographical novel by Kim Thúy, a Vietnamese-born Canadian writer. During the movie, students learned about French colonialism in Vietnam and followed one particular family's immigration story from Vietnam to Québec. They saw Canadian society through the eyes of newly arrived immigrant, Tinh, and followed the main character as she took her first French language classes, tried tir d'érable (maple taffy) and made her first Québecois friend, Johanne.

Appleby Students Attend Anti-Gravity Yoga Class
On February 28, students in Appleby's Yoga co-curricular visited Movati Burlington for an anti-gravity yoga class. The group tried inversions, restorative poses and Savasana (final resting pose) using a silk U-shaped hammock designed specifically for aerial yoga classes. Some benefits of aerial yoga include increase of kinesthetic awareness and agility, strengthening of core muscles, back pressure relief, and increase in muscular strength and flexibility.

New Bike Repair Station and Bike Tune-up Event
In case you missed it, there is a new bike repair station at the East side of the A.W.B. Alumni Centre for Athletics and Student Life to assist anyone who is riding their bike to school or around campus.
With the arrival of spring, many students will be eager to dust off their bicycles and take advantage of the beautiful weather on campus. To make riding to school even easier, we are holding a bike tune-up event on Tuesday, April 2, 2024. Northshore Cycle will be on campus to offer a Standard Tune-Up package with a special 15% discount for members of the Appleby community. The Standard Tune-Up will keep your bike running smoothly, and account for basic wear and tear from recreational riding. More advanced packages can be found on the website www.northshorecycle.ca and the Appleby 15% discount is applicable to each package.
If you are interested in having your bicycle serviced, just ride it or bring it to campus on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 and look for the Northshore Cycle sign. From Wednesday, April 3 through Saturday, April 6, 2024, students, employees and parents are invited to attend The Unconference of Hope & Bold School Climate Action taking place at the Hamilton Convention Centre and Hillfield Strathallan College. An unconference is a participant-centred event with a focus on interaction, experiential learning and collaboration. Co-hosted by Hillfield Strathallan College and Appleby College, this event will be an opportunity to meet others of all ages across Canada working on climate action in schools and learn practical, innovative new ways to solve school climate challenges. Blue Dog Spirit & Social Committee
After a wonderful display of creative acting, singing, set design, lighting, and stage props, the ACPA Spirit and Social Committee provided wonderful treats for the Blue Dog cast and crew of this year’s musical The Wedding Singer at The Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. Our Blue Dogs rocked the stage and filled the seats for a superb sold out show!

All Appleby parents are members of the association, which provides an opportunity to volunteer and help fundraise for the school. The ACPA is excited to announce that the Lost and Found now has a website! Led by two Senior Two students, this website will be regularly updated with new items. Missing something? You can now check the Lost and Found virtually, click here. If you see an item you have lost and would like to claim it, please visit the Lost and Found Monday to Friday, 11:20 a.m. to 1:10 p.m. It is located near the College Shop. You can also e-mail lostandfound@appleby.on.ca to ask about items you may have left behind. Please consider labelling all your items as this increases the likelihood of lost items being reunited with their rightful owners.
