Students Must Use Access Card/Fob to Enter Buildings on Campus
Over the past several months there have been repeated instances of students pulling on the handles of the A.W.B. Alumni Centre for Athletics and Student Life exterior doors (instead of using their access card or fob) in an effort to force them open. The excessive force being used has resulted in the door handles breaking off. This type of behaviour must stop. In future, any student damaging a door in this manner will be subject to disciplinary matters and the cost of repairing the door will be applied to their student account.

A Global Experiential Trip to Indonesia
From March 10 to 23, a group of 15 Upper Two students and three faculty members were hosted by the Green Camp in Bali, Indonesia. The trip had three main focuses: adventure, culture and above all, sustainability. Students were actively engaged in various team building and exploration activities daily including raft building, climbing coconut trees, traditional Balinese archery, dance and mud wrestling, a challenging bike ride through the rice fields, kayaking, snorkeling, camping, and the highlight of the trip, a sunset hike up Mount Batur. On the islands of Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, students learned about the effects of climate change on coral and the importance of seaweed farming for the both the local community as well as its many important roles in coastal ecosystems. Students also learned that the Balinese farmers use a traditional agricultural technique called "subak" to grow rice on hills without destroying the landscape of their island's rice terraces. Students then helped to plant rice seedlings and contributed to making compost. From a cultural perspective, students learned some Bahasa, the official language of Indonesia and put their skills to use in a local market where they bought fresh ingredients to then participate in a Master Chef Bali challenge! The trip ended with a brief visit to the PKP Women’s Centre, where all students and staff lent a hand in constructing a cement staircase to make the grounds more accessible for all.

The trip included a visit to The Metropolitan Museum, three Broadway shows, a workshop with Broadway actors, and exploring many of New York's tourist attractions. The main highlight of the trip was the group's Carnegie Hall debut. Singing Mendelssohn's Psalm 42 under the direction of Dr. Charlene Pauls and accompanied by the New England Symphonic Ensemble was a tremendous honour. Students and faculty performed in a mass choir of 111 singers from across Canada, spending hours in rehearsal and individual practice. Congratulations to all involved!

Canadian Young Physicists’ Tournament
Appleby was incredibly pleased to participate in this year’s Canadian Young Physicists’ Tournament (CaYPT). This is a challenging national competition that pits teams of five students against each other over several rounds of ‘Physics matches’. Teams spend months preparing investigations and solutions to ten complicated physics phenomena. On February 24 and March 2, Appleby students Carrie Chen, Spencer Guerreiro-Marsden, Ali Shaikh, Dylan Sharpe, and Oli Shorey did a phenomenal job of presenting and defending their investigations, while providing thoughtful opposition to their competitors. This was Appleby’s first-ever entry in CaYPT, and we are thrilled with their overall placing of eighth in Canada. Congratulations!
