Updated Cell Phone Policy
For the 2024-2025 school year, cell phones will be collected by teachers at the beginning of each class, club, and co-curricular and will be stored safely for students, to minimize distractions and the use of phones during washroom breaks. Students will collect their phones at the end of each class as they leave and head to their next school activity.
The purpose behind this rule is to limit distractions from the learning experience and promote a respectful learning environment. Students will be asked to put away their phones if they are using them without permission and as always should be striving to uphold the school’s core ethical values. Students who are unable to respect these parameters may have their phones delivered to the appropriate School Director and returned at the end of the day, following a conversation. Should parents need to contact their child immediately for an emergency, they are to call main reception at 905-845-4681 ext. 200 and the administration team will contact the child and have them call home. Thank you for your support.

New After-Hours Technology Usage Policy for Upper One, Upper Two and Senior One Boarding Students
At Appleby College, we are committed to creating an environment that promotes a healthy balance between technology use and holistic development of our students. Appleby’s Boarding Life team, in conjunction with the Wellbeing Team, and, in keeping with Appleby’s cell phone policy, are implementing a new after-hours technology use policy for our Upper One, Upper Two and Senior One boarding students. In today’s digital age, we recognize the importance of technology and its role in our lives, especially for our children. However, we also understand the necessity of ensuring a good night’s sleep and maintaining healthy bedtime routines, as these are connected to promoting overall physical and cognitive health, especially for adolescents.
Beginning Tuesday, September 3, 2024, we are implementing the following Technology Usage Policy for our Upper One, Upper Two and Senior One boarding students that includes restricting device access by securing cellphones in locked cabinets beginning just before bedtime.
Policy Guidelines:
- To encourage uninterrupted rest and sleep, Upper One to Senior One boarding students are required to deposit their phones by 10:00 p.m. (Upper School) or 10:30 p.m. (Senior One). The school has provided secure cabinets in common areas to hold student devices overnight.
- Following the December break, Senior One students will not be required to hand in their device each evening, however the option will still be there for them to securely store their device if they wish.
- Students should have their devices charged and will power off the devices before storing for the night.
- In the morning, before class, students will collect their devices from the common room where the Support Don on duty will be there to open the cabinet and return the devices beginning at 8:00 a.m.
Please note: this policy is NOT meant to be a punitive action for students. It is simply to build healthy sleep habits and a healthy relationship with their technology. Should parents need to get in contact with their child after lights out, please call the boarding house duty phone number (included below) to contact the teacher on duty who will then reach their child.
-Baillie House: +1 905-510-8836
-Colley House: +1 905-580-2026
-Powell's House: +1 905-580-0931
-Walker House: +1 905-510-6380
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we implement this new policy. We understand that this will be an adjustment for everyone. Our goal is to create a healthy and supportive environment that allows our children to thrive. We believe it will have a positive impact on your child’s health and wellbeing.

ACPA "Boarder’s Corner" for New Appleby Boarders
A warm welcome to our new Appleby boarders! We are excited to meet you and get to know you. There is so much to consider and prepare when moving into a boarding house. While some of the necessities may seem like common sense, it is always useful to make sure you have all the essential items to help organize and create your boarding room spaces – these items will help to make you feel more at home. To help in this process, the Appleby College Parents' Association (ACPA) Sustainability team has created a “Boarder’s Corner” to sell used items from former Appleby boarders for your room such as a study lamp, extension cord, clothing hangers, bedding, mirror, storage boxes, or laundry basket, etc. – these items are all in good condition, and suitable to reuse and recycle to maximize their value. Please visit the Appleby College Shop in the A.W.B. Alumni Centre for Athletics and Student Life and visit the “Boarder’s Corner” section. Shop early to make your new boarding life easier. The sale will take place during the New Boarder Orientation on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Appleby's Boarding Life team is happy to provide an update regarding mini-fridges for boarding rooms. All rooms in boarding, in all boarding Houses will be equipped with mini-fridges provided by the school. Students will not be required to supply their own. We apologize for the change, and hope that this adjustment will make move-in and boarding easier for everyone.
Guardian Information for New International Boarders
Every international boarding student (a student whose primary residence is outside of Canada regardless of citizenship) must complete the Guardian registration annually as part of a Federal Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) requirement. Appleby requires that each international boarding student has a Guardian. The Guardian is the legal custodian of the student and as such has the legal authority and the corresponding duty to provide care and wellbeing for the student while in Canada. If you have any questions about the Guardianship Program or if you do not have a Guardian who can commit to the duty of care outlined above, please contact the Admissions Office.

Grade Parties
Each September, Appleby sponsors grade-specific parties for parents and host families, hosted by ACPA volunteers. It's a great way to meet and socialize with other parents in your child's grade. The Principal, senior administrators, and teachers will be in attendance. A formal e-invitation to RSVP was distributed on Thursday, August 28. Please note that the events are held outdoors, and the dress code is casual. This is a non-student event. Parents in attendance are also encouraged to bring a list of your child's teachers to this event.
