This Past Week’s Events in Israel and Gaza
The past week has been an especially difficult and challenging one for many within our community. Last Saturday’s horrific terrorist attack in Israel and the ongoing violence in Gaza and Israel have caused immense human suffering and has once again raised the spectre of war in a region that has for too long suffered due to strife and conflict.
Within our Appleby College community we have both Jewish and Palestinian members, who like the rest of us are struggling trying to process this past week’s events. A critical first step in understanding the impact these events have had on ourselves and others is being able to talk openly, empathetically, and thoughtfully amongst our community. On Friday, the School’s Guidance and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB) teams sent an e-mail to students inviting those wanting to talk - in a safe and respectful environment - to come to MB207 on Monday, October 16, during lunch, from 12:05 to 12:45 p.m. to meet with members of the wellbeing team. For those students who may not be ready for a community-wide conversation, our Jewish Affinity Group and our Muslim Affinity Group will be meeting on Wednesday, October 18 during Blue Time from 1:10 to 1:30 p.m. In both instances, the October 16 conversation as well as the October 18 affinity group conversations will be guided by Appleby’s core ethical values of respect, responsibility, integrity, and compassion.
These will also be opportunities where we can come together as a community to offer support, kindness and understanding to one another. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this past week’s violence, and we pray for peace in the region.
Sincerely,
Innes van Nostrand

Students Required to Wear First Dress Uniform
Students are required to wear the first dress uniform. A "first dress" Appleby uniform includes an Appleby school blazer, plain white or solid light blue dress shirt, Appleby tie, grey pants or Appleby kilt, and appropriate dress socks (no white socks) with pants, or navy blue knee-high socks or plain navy blue opaque tights (no patterns, no sheer nylons) with a kilt. For more information on Appleby’s dress code please review the Standards of School Dress and Appearance. Since the start of the school year, faculty have noticed improvements in students' uniforms, acceptance of the rules, and in overall support of each other. Equally important, when uniform issues have been addressed, there is a positive response and a commitment to do better.
A reminder that if you need Appleby uniform pieces, please visit www.topmarks.ca to place an order (Appleby's schoolcode is APP01). Should you have any questions, contact Top Marks' helpful Customer Service Department at 1-800-667-7105 (Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EDT) or at info@topmarks.ca.

2023-2024 Appleby College Walkathon - Thursday, October 19
Walkathon, an Appleby tradition, educates and enables our students to become leaders of character, major contributors to, and valued representatives of their local, national and international communities. Since 1969 when Appleby students first walked 32.2 km and raised $2,800 for Oxfam (Oxford Famine Relief), they have been giving back to others. This year, on Thursday, October, 19, 2023, students will run/walk just under 20 km across Oakville raising funds for organizations including United Way Halton & Hamilton, Oakville Community Foundation, Temagami Community Foundation and Queer@Rock.
Registration and Fundraising
All students are registered for the Walkathon. If you would like to make a pledge to support a participant, you can access their page by visiting the main Walkathon page and searching for their name.
Calling All Volunteers
Walkathon is Appleby's largest volunteer event and we need over 300 volunteers! If you've been looking for a way to help, this is your chance. This wonderful school event runs much of the day and requires everyone’s commitment to make it a success - from students, to faculty and staff, and especially volunteers. Current parents, parents of alumni, alumni and grandparents are encouraged to sign-up and help. To select a Walkathon volunteer location and time, please click here and sign-up. Below are details about signing up and volunteering at the event:
- Please pick a time slot to volunteer, but do not take 'APPLEBY STAFF SPOTS' as these are reserved for faculty and staff.
- If you would like to be with a friend you may also sign them up using their contact information (with their permission).
- Please plan to arrive early for your shift and remember that Walkathon runs rain or shine so dress accordingly.
- All shift locations have at least two helpers; if there is an asterisk for a location, an Appleby employee will be one of the crew.
- Feel free to bring a chair, but please leave pets at home.
- The end time for all shifts are approximate; a “sweeper” will be by to apprise volunteers of the status of the walkers.
- A final list will be sent the night before the event, but you will receive an e-mail confirmation of your time.
Visit the Walkathon Information site on BBK12 to learn more about the available volunteer roles and the optional training on Zoom. If you have any questions about volunteering at this year's Walkathon, please e-mail Jennifer Latimer, Walkathon committee parent volunteer coordinator, at jenlatimer6@icloud.com.
Showing Your Spirit (Rain or Shine)
As the Walkathon takes place outdoors, students are encouraged to wear comfortable footwear and to dress for the weather (pants, long sleeves, etc.). Please click here to view options available in the College Shop.
