Junior Outdoor Leader Trip to the S. Bruce McLaughlin Northern Campus
Appleby’s Senior One Junior Outdoor Leaders (JOLs) travelled to the S. Bruce McLaughlin Northern Campus in Temagami last week. The group learned outdoor skills and enjoyed practicing different leadership techniques. Together, students prepared meals, paddled approximately 50 kilometres, and sawed and chopped firewood to prepare fires - all with attentive instruction from guides. Through this experience, JOLs not only prepared to lead Upper Two Winter Temagami trips next year, they also brought something valuable back to campus - their unique perspectives on the natural environment, knowledge on how to lead a team, new connections, and insight about their potential.

Observance for Human Life - Wednesday, November 1
In recognition of the challenging times our world is facing and the impact these challenges are having on many in our community, we extend a heartfelt invitation to all members of the Appleby College community - students, parents and families, employees, and alumni - to attend an "Observance for Human Life" on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 from 6:15 to 6:45 p.m. in the A.W.B. Alumni Centre for Athletics and Student Life single gym. Please join us as we come together as a community of one, to pause and reflect on the profound impact and suffering global conflicts past and present - are having on humanity. In honour of the space we're creating, we kindly ask that everyone wear white attire and refrain from wearing any symbols that may carry political connotations. This gesture symbolizes our collective commitment to unity and shared humanity, transcending political affiliations and fostering a space of inclusivity. We hope that by sharing a space for communal connection we can provide support and compassion to one another as we navigate the hardships and complexities of our shared journey.
As part of this event, we will feature luminaries where we invite everyone to write their own personal and private intentions on paper which will be placed in paper bags, lit with LED candles, to create a symbolic display that reinforces our shared commitment to unity and compassion during the evening observance. Students will be invited during their lunch hour Monday through Wednesday to write their intentions in the Schlesinger Dining Hall, while families are welcome to bring in a piece of paper, printed from the provided template linked here to the event. Join us in this heartfelt initiative to add a personal touch to our communal reflection.
