Parent-Teacher Conferences - Booking Now Open
On Tuesday, November 21, 2023 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. EST and Friday, November 24, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. EST Appleby will be hosting online Parent-Teacher Conferences via Zoom. We encourage parents to sign-up for the meetings as they are an excellent way to learn about your child's progress, where they are doing well, and where there might be opportunity for improvement. Although marks will be reported, the focus of both our Fall report cards and Parent-Teacher Conferences are on learning skills and progress in courses so far. Again this year, Appleby is using a scheduling system called PickaTime for Parent-Teacher Conference sign-up. To access the scheduler, please login to BBK12 with your Blackbaud ID. Click here to access BBK12.
After logging into BBK12, navigate to the Resource Board and click on the Parent-Teacher Conference Sign-up resource tile. You will then be automatically logged into the scheduling system and be able to start making your appointment selections. Once you have completed your selections, you will receive an e-mail confirmation including a summary of bookings and Zoom meeting links. To ensure that everyone has an opportunity to meet with their child's teachers, Parent-Teacher Conferences will be scheduled in seven minute slots.
Your child’s initial Fall report card, which will include teacher feedback on learning skills and course progress so far, will be available for review on Thursday, November 9, 2023. You are encouraged to read your child’s initial report and in particular the teacher comments prior to your Parent-Teacher Conferences. In the event you cannot attend the online Parent-Teacher Conferences, please don't hesitate to contact your child's teachers by e-mail with any questions after you have read through your child’s report card.
Parent-Teacher interview bookings will close on Thursday, November 16, 2023.

Students Attend Ontario British Parliamentary Qualifier
On October 28, students from Appleby's Varsity Debate co-curricular competed in the Ontario British Parliamentary Qualifier. Competitive teams from Canadian Accredited Independent Schools, public and Catholic schools across the province vied for a limited number of spots to the National Championships. Competing in four rounds of British Parliamentary style debate, Appleby’s Senior and Under 15 (U15) teams considered motions such as ‘This House believes that environmental policy should be decided by unelected scientific experts selected by their peers,’ ‘This House as a University scholarship fund would prioritize allocating funds based on merit rather than economic necessity,’ and ‘This House would require sports teams to be owned by their local communities as opposed to corporations or foreign individuals,’ among other topics. Debating impromptu style, each round students are allocated a different position – proposition or opposition – then have 15 minutes without access to any resources to develop their team’s argumentation. During the rounds, students give five-minute speeches and ask and answer questions as the debate progresses.
Congratulations to all participants, Upper One students Ella Feng, Michael Sun and Michael Yang, Upper Two students Ved Hardas and Jake Stamper, Senior One students Nicole Li and Alinna Liu, and Senior Two students Neil Yang, Franklin Zeng and Albert Zhuang.
Appleby’s teams saw solid performances in both the Senior and U15 divisions, with the team of Ella and Jake placing second overall in U15. Ella also earned 4th place in U15 speaker points. This team will now represent Ontario at the 2023 Canadian British Parliamentary Asper Cup Debate Championships in Winnipeg from Friday, November 17 to Sunday, November 19, 2023. This is the third year in a row that Appleby has sent a U15 team to this Championship.

Students Attend the World Press Photo Exhibition
On October 27, Senior One students enrolled in Appleby's Media Studies course travelled to Toronto to attend the World Press Photo Exhibition. The winning photo from 2023 was of a scene in Mariupol, Ukraine. The students, who are currently in studying news and journalism, took time to reflect on the heroism of photojournalists and members of the press who put themselves in harms way to report stories that are happening all over the world, and the importance of free press.
