Appleby College's Global Experiential trips aim to introduce experiences that are a foundation for fostering community and intercultural understanding, while granting opportunities for personal growth, leadership, building teamwork skills, reflective practices, and further global understanding outside one's own culture.
We are incredibly excited to provide Global Experiential trip opportunities this year to our students, starting with the following. On Friday, November 24, 2023, 14 Upper Two, Senior One and Senior Two students and three employees will travel to Costa Rica for 12 days. The group will have an opportunity to experience an immersive journey and explore what it means to consume less rather than always trying to consume more. Students will travel into the heart of Costa Rica’s rainforest to visit the Bribri people and share with a community of Indigenous people in the village of Yorkín for whom consuming “stuff” has always been less important than other pursuits such as free time, community, solidarity, and respect for nature. Nowhere on earth matches the rich biological diversity of this tropical rainforest, and on the trip, students will experience all the wonder and beauty of this biologically diverse and fascinating place.
Also, on Friday, November 24, 2023, 12 Upper Two, Senior One and Senior Two students and two employees will depart for Ecuador and spend 12 days in the Galapagos Islands. The Galapagos Islands are a spectacular natural laboratory renowned for their endemic biodiversity, but much of the unique wildlife in the archipelago is under threat. Invasive species have ravaged wildlife habitat and a rapidly changing climate is further disrupting the natural systems that wildlife relies upon for survival. In partnership with the Galapagos National Park, Appleby students will work with Ecology Project International’s programs and participate in ongoing field research on the Islands’ Giant Tortoise population.
On Saturday, November 25, 2023, 15 Senior One and Senior Two students and three employees will visit Colombia for 13 days. Students traveling on this culturally rich program will explore Colombia's Indigenous and colonial history while looking critically at issues of economic inequality, sustainable tourism, and the recent regional political developments that have resulted in many of the nearly 4 million Venezuelan refugees heading into Colombia. They will benefit from a variety of perspectives on the Colombian identity, and learn about the history and legacy of various cities.
Finally, also on Saturday, November 25, 2023, 11 Upper Two, Senior One and Senior Two students and three employees will travel to Guatemala for 13 days. In the western highlands of Guatemala, over 80 percent of the population is Indigenous Maya. While the influences of colonization, economic development, and political violence have left their mark on the countryside, there remains a rich legacy of cultural survival and community strength in the face of diverse external pressures. Students will focus on the Lake Atitlán region of the country and themes of cultural identity and food systems. By engaging with local farmers, activists and educators, students will engage in a myriad of projects aimed at food justice, cultural identity, agroecology, and fair trade.
While participants prepare for these exciting trips, this week on campus we look forward to welcoming the Right Honourable David Johnston who will be speaking to Appleby students and faculty on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. The former Governor General of Canada will be discussing the themes in his books Trust: Twenty Ways to Build a Better Country and Empathy: Turning Compassion into Action in a fireside chat format, moderated by Senior Two student Misimi Sanni. Additional details about this presentation are included in the Coming Events section below.
As we begin the week, I would also like to recognize Diwali which took place yesterday, Sunday, November 12. We hope everyone who celebrated had a safe and peaceful celebration with family and friends. We will be hosting a special Diwali lunch for students, faculty and staff on Tuesday, November 14, 2023.
We wish all our Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala and Colombia trip participants safe travels and look forward to hearing about their experiences upon their return!
Sincerely,
|

Students Visit Six Nations of the Grand River
On October 20, students enrolled in Contemporary Indigenous Issues in a Global Context (NDW 4M) travelled to Six Nations of the Grand River, the most populous reserve in Canada, and the only community that includes all six Haudenosaunee nations. The group’s first stop was the Woodland Cultural Centre, site of the former Mohawk Institute, the longest-running residential school in Canada. Here, students presented the Woodland Cultural Centre with a cheque for $1,000, the proceeds from Appleby's Orange Shirt Day fundraiser at the end of September. While at the museum in the Woodland Cultural Centre, students visited the exhibit “Doug Maracle: Come Walk With Me.” At the exhibit, students met with Mohawk artist Doug Maracle, who is Bear Clan from Six Nations, and he spoke with them about his artistic process and the cultural context of his works. Students also visited the Ancestral Voices Healing Centre in Oshweken, and had a tour of Pauline Johnson’s childhood home at Chiefswood National Historic Centre.
