At Appleby College we make the commitment in our Mission Statement, to educate and enable our students to become leaders of character, major contributors to, and valued representatives of their local, national and international communities. As such, leadership opportunities both big and small have been embedded into all aspects of the Appleby experience, helping us to better prepare students with confidence and service orientation for the world beyond the school.
Beginning in Middle School and extending through to Senior School, we facilitate and coach our students in all aspects of leadership – making it an intentional part of the academic curriculum as well as our co-curricular and experiential education programmes.
While many people equate leadership to specific roles or positions, we see leadership as being much more about developing self and learning how to engage others to serve our community through the cultivation of relationships and the development of skills and attitudes, through informal rather than formal roles. Throughout the school year students have multiple pathways in which they can pursue leadership development opportunities at Appleby. Each of these has specific responsibilities and time commitments. For example, students can join one of the more than 15 clubs that focus on leadership behaviour and skill development; attend different workshops and conferences; or apply to take on a formal leadership role at the school as a Senior One Leader, Prefect or House Council Member. In Middle and Upper School, students are supported as they discover and grow their individual leadership styles and capabilities in preparation for Senior School when they are encouraged to apply for a variety of formal leadership positions including Prefect roles, House Council positions, Chapel Wardens, Argus Editor-in-Chief, Grad-Class Ambassador, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) Council Leaders, Head Student Ambassador, and others. We believe that leadership is an opportunity to do more; to care for one another, and our community.
While the application process varies with each role, each position has a formal job description and requires students to submit a resume and cover letter, a statement on diversity and inclusivity at Appleby, provide internal references, and participate in a panel interview. In addition to these components, the Prefect role selection process engages the student and faculty community through a democratic voting process. All of these pieces are taken into consideration when the Principal, the Head of School & Deputy Principal, and the Assistant Head of School, Student Life appoint the students for these important leadership roles. Any students interested in pursuing a formal leadership position are encouraged to speak with their Advisor, the Director, Student Leadership, or School Directors about the many opportunities available.
Every day there are opportunities to consider how we can serve our community. However, formal applications to senior leadership roles will not be available until after March Break.
Thank you to all of our student leaders for a fantastic start to the school year!
Sincerely,
|
Dr. Claire Kelly
Assistant Head of School, Student Life |

Appleby’s Diplomas of Distinction
This year we are piloting three new diplomas of distinction in Business Leadership, STEM Leadership and Creative Arts Leadership.
Each diploma of distinction is designed to recognize students who – in addition to meeting the requisites of an Appleby College diploma – choose to pursue a number of extra credit activities related to their specific area of interest.
In addition to becoming highly proficient in interrelated course work before students begin their postsecondary studies in their particular area of interest, the connections students will make have the potential to turn into collaborations, mentorship opportunities, and exposure to new research and ideas, making them more appealing candidates for scholarships, internships and job opportunities.
Visit www.appleby.on.ca/our-strategic-vision for more information.
