A Global Experiential Trip to Argentina
From March 7 t0 19, 25 students and five employees embarked on a Global Experiential rugby trip to Argentina. The trip was focused on observing the influence Argentinean culture has on sport and vice versa. To do this, the group fully immersed themselves in homestays (with local families), historical sightseeing, cultural opportunities, stadium tours and enjoyed local/national cuisine. The itinerary locations included El Bolson, Bariloche, Buenos Aires and Chacabuco, and each of these places presented something unique. Whether it was the amazing views of the Andes in El Bolson and Bariloche, the historical sites in Buenos Aires, or the warmth and hospitality of our hosts in Chacabuco. Throughout the trip, three rugby matches were played. The first game against Jabalies Rugby Club saw the hosts victorious 38-31; the second resulted in a win for Appleby 35-10 versus Barker College; and in the final match against Social Rugby Club the visitors were again victorious in a shutout win of 45-0. The trip was a fantastic experience for everyone involved!

Students and Faculty Travel to Senegal
Twelve students and three faculty members travelled to Senegal on a Global Experiential trip during March Break. This experience allowed students to immerse themselves in Senegalese culture and “teraanga” - a Wolof word meaning “hospitality, generosity, and warmth”. Students learned basic greetings in Wolof and had opportunities to practice when dining over a communal plate and engaging with various community members, they also interviewed villagers who had experienced displacement due to climate change and clandestine immigration. In Dakar, students reflected on the gruesome transatlantic slave trade and deepened their learning of Black civilizations and diasporas. Visiting the African Renaissance Monument allowed students an opportunity to reflect on African rebirth following colonialism. Moreover, students learned about Islamic practices, touring mosques and hearing the calls to prayer throughout their stay. In Thiès, students moved into their homestays and once again experienced “teraanga”. Daily activities included visiting a school, bartering in the local market, and visiting artisanal workshops. However, the highlight for many students was the time spent building relationships and engaging with their homestay families. The trip concluded in Toulab Dialao, where students reflected on their personal growth and two-week adventure, overlooking the ocean and cliffs.

Appleby Students and Employees Travel to Cambodia
During the March Break, 16 Appleby students and three employees travelled to Cambodia on a Global Experiential trip. The group began their journey in Phnom Penh and visited the S21 Toul Sleng Genocide Museum, a local Wat for a Q&A and blessing with a Monk, learned about the Cambodia economy at a market, and enjoyed a sunset cruise on the Mekong River. Mornings for the group were filled with Khmer language and cultural lessons. While in Koh P’Dao, a rural village on an island in the middle of the Mekong River, everyone stayed with local families and had an opportunity to learn from a Khmer Rouge survivor, a fisherman, a farmer and village leaders, and attend a wedding, soccer game, and monk blessing ceremony. To thank the amazing local families, the group held a celebration that included food, dancing and karaoke. In Siem Reap students visited the UNESCO World Heritage Site Angkor, learned a traditional dance, and attended a circus by a group that works with underprivileged children.
