Upper One Debate Tournament
On April 11, the Upper One Debate Tournament took place on campus. A student representative from each Upper One English class was chosen to participate in a prepped round of Canadian Parliamentary style debating. Sixteen students debated one of two resolutions, either whether or not children experience enough failure, or if the responsibility for mitigating/preventing climate change should fall on the individual (as a consumer), rather than on corporations. The semi-finalists performed exceptionally well in front of their peers while being judged by a panel of parent volunteers and senior debaters. After the first round, one student from each debate was chosen to move to the final, which took place in Willis Hall. The final resolution was: This House believes that the Canadian government should regulate food prices by putting a price ceiling (or price cap) on grocery store items. Congratulations to Lily Fu, Ella Feng, Ivan Zhuo, and Isobel Fox for making it to the debate finals, and to Ella Feng for being named best overall speaker for the Upper One Debating Competition!

DEIB Day 2024
Appleby's DEIB Day 2024 was a vibrant celebration of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. The day began with the rhythmic thuds of taiko drummers from RAW Performers, setting the tone for a day of reflection and empowerment. Keynote speaker Lali Mohamed followed, and inspired attendees to embrace their differences and carve out spaces of belonging in various social circles. For the duration of the morning, approximately 96 students from Middle Two through Senior Two collaborated to plan and facilitate workshops on crucial topics such as gender in sports, allyship, mental health justice, and climate justice, fostering dialogue and understanding. Lunchtime brought opportunities for students to share belonging stories and explore the rich tapestry of cultural identities showcased at the ACPA cultural fair. Then in the afternoon, students and faculty were engaged in immersive workshops brought in from various community partnerships. As everyone participated in the activities, they were encouraged to listen, engage, and appreciate different perspectives, with the ultimate goal of building a more inclusive community where everyone feels valued and "belonging" at Appleby. Click the image to the left to see a gallery of images from throughout the day.
