Earth Day and Earth Week
Appleby's Earth Week initiatives focused on the topics of plastic pollution and fast fashion. Students were encouraged to participate in activities including a Sustainability Fair, campus clean ups, and activity choices during "Green" time. In addition, students had the opportunity to hear from three guest speakers - Natasha Tucker from Mind Your Plastics, Rick Hill, Tuscarora of the Beaver clan and recently appointed Officer of the Order of Canada (as part of the Aki-Kinomaage: The Earth as Teacher conference on campus), and Adam Shoalts, a modern Canadian explorer and advocate of sustainability.
As part of Appleby's Earth Day initiatives, an art piece titled The Magnificent Eastern White Pine was unveiled in the breezeway between the A.W.B. Alumni Centre for Athletics and Student Life and the McLaughlan Quadrangle. Produced by alumnus Roger Brenninkmeyer '90, designed by faculty member Stephanie Seagram, and funded by the graduating class, The Magnificent Eastern White Pine commemorates Appleby's commitment to reducing plastic consumption as a campus and as individuals.
