An Experiential Education Trip to Greece
During the March Break, 28 students from Appleby's Orchestra and Math clubs, along with four faculty members, travelled to mainland Greece to explore the connection between music and math as considered by the ancient Greeks. Starting in Athens, students visited ancient Greek ruins while learning about how architects used math, particularly the Golden ratio, to create buildings with both form and function. Students then presented a workshop to an audience of local Greek high school students that explored how three composers used math in their compositions. Next the group traveled to Nafplio, Mystra, Olympia and Delphi to collaborate with a local choir and expert of Greek music, visit a museum of ancient Greek musical instruments, and the site of the original Olympic games. Learning how the culture and religion, language, math, and music of ancient Greece influenced modern society had an immense impact on the group as innumerable ties were made between ancient Greek society and how we live today.
