New Policies in Effect
In preparation for the new school year, please review the following policies regarding food delivery, student cell phone usage, and laptops/tablets in the Schlesinger Dining Hall. Thank you for your support.
Food Delivery Policy
- Food deliveries for students are not permitted to campus during the academic school day (8:45 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.). This includes (and is not limited to) food delivery services such as Uber Eats, Skip the Dishes, and DoorDash. Ordering food presents a safety concern with unknown adult contacts. It can also disrupt students’ learning and attendance. Additionally, ordering food does not support the school’s goals around sustainability and regeneration, adding waste and adding to our carbon footprint as a community. Sodexo offers a wide range of healthy meals and snacks throughout the school day, and students may purchase additional snacks from the College Shop. As a school, we will explore offering additional food and beverages on campus to accommodate students’ dietary preferences. If students have questions about this change, they can speak to their School Director or a Sustainability and Regeneration Director.
Cell Phone Policy - Expectations for Student Cell Phone Use
- Appleby students are to leave their cell phones in their bag, blazer or locker (out of sight) during classes, co-curriculars, clubs, community times/assemblies. There are only two exceptions - if a faculty member has given permission for a cell phone to be used for an academic purpose in class, or if a student is responsible for media creation and official posts on behalf of Appleby. The purpose behind this rule is to limit distractions from the learning experience and promote a respectful learning environment. Students who are unable to respect these parameters may have their phones delivered to the appropriate School Director and returned at the end of the day, following a conversation. Should parents need to contact their child immediately for an emergency, they are to call main reception at 905-845-4681 ext. 200 and the administration team will contact the child and have them call home.
Laptops/Tablets in the Schlesinger Dining Hall
- Laptops and tablets are prohibited in the Dining Hall during all lunch periods, or at any other location or time when food is being consumed. The rationale behind this includes and is not limited to, encouraging our students to develop positive social skills, positive interactions with peers, and prevent food damage to the devices.
Requests for Co-curricular Exemptions for 2023-2024
Students in Upper One, Upper Two and Senior Two may apply for an exemption from co-curricular programming for one term, or one day per week to pursue high-level external programming. If Appleby offers this programming, students must also “play” for Appleby in that year.
Continuing with changes to the co-curricular passport to enhance flexibility and choice for students, we will continue to offer Senior One students the option to take one term off co-curriculars, reducing the requirement to complete two co-curriculars over three terms.
Senior Two students must complete three terms of co-curricular of their choosing, provided they have met their Arts/Service requirement.
All exemption requests should be entered here and will be reviewed by Dr. Claire Kelly, assistant head of school, student life, for consideration and approval.
Please note: Reporting Period One and Reporting Period Two forms must be submitted by Wednesday, September 6, 2023; Reporting Period Three requests will be due in January 2024.

Pre-season athletic camps will be held from Tuesday, September 5 to Thursday, September 7 , 2023 for Varsity Boys' Soccer, Varsity Girls' Basketball, Cross Country Running, Varsity Girls' Field Hockey and Varsity Boys' Volleyball.
Course Request Changes
Course request changes will open on Friday, September 15, 2023 and will remain open until the last date to add a new course on Friday, September 29, 2023. Students will be required to attend their classes in September even if they intend to put in a request to change. Please note: course change requests by e-mail will not be processed.
Middle Two Presentations of Learning
The Middle Two Presentations of Learning (POL) are a culminating event celebrating academic and affective growth as students finish Middle School. They highlight meaningful learning experiences for teachers, peers, Home Form Advisors, and parents across all aspects of their learning at Appleby.
During this June’s exam period, Middle Two students had an opportunity to share their POLs with peers, teachers and evaluating panelists consisting of other Appleby faculty members. Each unique Middle Two POL was a fantastic demonstration of self-assessment, reflections on personal growth, and celebration of achievements. Middle Two students can find and share their POL videos on BULB, please click here.

Looking for a Copy of Your Child’s Immunization Record?
Families looking to obtain their child’s immunization record will need to contact the Halton Public Health Department. Student’s with OHIP may be able to access their immunization record online by visiting www.halton.ca/immunize and selecting the “View and Update Immunization Record” button.
International students without OHIP will need to call the Halton Public Health Department to request an Immunization ID and PIN number to access the Halton website. A customer service representative will take the student’s information and pass the request on to the Halton Immunization Services team for follow-up. International students looking for assistance to call Halton can stop by Appleby's Health Centre for support.
Medication at School:
Medication should be given at home whenever possible. However, if medication must be administered during school hours (prescription or over-the-counter), medication must be brought to the Health Centre in the original container with proper labeling and a Medication Dispensing Form must be completed.
Boarding students are not allowed to have any over-the-counter medications in their boarding rooms. Should students require to take medication while in boarding it will first need to be reviewed by the school nurse. Once approved, a week's worth of medication may be kept in boarding (some medication may need to be dispensed daily). The remainder of the medication must be stored in the Health Centre and kept in its original packaging (written in English). For further information on our medication at school policy, please contact the school nurse at nurses@appleby.on.ca or 905-845-4681 ext. 229.
