Homecoming 2024 gave me a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with alumni that spanned across the generations. From catching up with Blue Dogs who graduated just last year, to spending time with a Class of 1944 alumnus and hearing their firsthand accounts about how the campus landscape has changed since they were a student 80 years ago! So I found it very interesting (and reassuring) that despite the passage of time, one thing became clearly apparent in my discussions with alumni throughout the celebratory weekend. Appleby’s campus is more than bricks and mortar – it’s one’s home for life! The Appleby campus plays a vital role in the alumni experience. As well as being a showcase for the collective history and achievement of the Appleby community, our campus is a place for the kinds of intellectual and social exchange that give rise to new ideas, friendships, and opportunities. Appleby is a destination for celebration, learning, dialogue, career enhancement, mentorship, innovation, personal growth, and cultural enrichment. With a wide range of resources, we’re committed to fostering lasting, meaningful connections. Whether it’s returning to campus to enjoy our facilities while participating in one of Appleby’s Connect-Ed sessions; cheering on our student athletes from the sidelines during championship games; or when Alumni choose to send their own children to Appleby to share in the experience. At the heart of it – Appleby is home. From first-time visitors to returning alumni, the Appleby campus has always been a place where all are welcomed – in effect, a friendly front door. But you don’t need to knock. Just walk in and make yourself at home. Lou Cafazzo
For the past 50 years, the Appleby College Archives have preserved and documented the ongoing story of the school. As the keeper of Appleby’s institutional memory since 1974, we look forward to celebrating this milestone anniversary by sharing Appleby historical facts, trivia, and more throughout the coming year in Alumni Ties. WE NEED YOUR HELP! The Archives are on a mission to track down the history and origins of the House mascots, and House colours. If you have any information pertaining to when either were introduced, including toy stuffed animal mascots, please contact Shelley Respondek, Archivist.
