On behalf of Appleby College, we hope you had an enjoyable and relaxing Winter Holiday. We're looking forward to being back on campus and the excitement that comes with the New Year! We can't wait to welcome students when classes resume on Tuesday, January 7, 2025. The New Year kicks off with a variety of trips and events taking place. Later this month, our Upper Two students and Senior Two outdoor leaders will begin preparing for their trips to the S. Bruce McLaughlin Northern Campus taking place throughout January and February. We are also looking forward to our annual student United Way Week campaign beginning on Monday, January 27, 2025 and an action-packed Winter Community Weekend is planned for Friday, February 7 to Saturday, February 8, 2025. Best wishes for a happy, healthy and successful 2025. Sincerely, |

This school year, Halton Region Public Health is enforcing the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA) for students born in 2007 to 2012 (students in Middle One through Senior Two).
Thank you to all parents/guardians and students who have provided the required information to Public Health. Halton students born from 2007 to 2012, and whose immunization records are not up to date, are still at risk of school suspension, starting Thursday, February 6, 2025 (Upper One through Senior Two) and Thursday, March 20, 2025 (Middle One and Middle Two), unless the required information is provided to Halton Region Public Health. If you received the Order for Suspension Attendance at school notice it’s because of one or more of following reasons:
-
Received immunizations that have not been reported to Public Health;
-
Is missing a required vaccine; or
-
Received vaccines that do not meet the requirements of Ontario's routine immunization schedule.
Parents/legal guardians and students who received the Order for Suspension from Attendance at School notice and should complete the following actions as soon as possible:
-
Visit halton.ca/immunize to review the student’s record and submit the required information. For students who are 16 or older, please see the specific instructions on halton.ca/immunize to access the online record.
-
If the student requires immunization, arrange for them to receive the vaccine doses through their regular health care provider*, or at a Public Health Community Immunization Clinic. A limited number of Public Health clinic appointments are now available - visit halton.ca/immunize to check clinic availability and book an appointment.
*Parents/guardians must promptly report all vaccines administered by health care providers to Public Health by visiting halton.ca/immunize.
Self-Paced AI Courses – Access for Parents
Students have received an e-mail with self-enrollment links for two introductory level modules on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The following links provide parents with an opportunity to view the content on both courses. AI is a huge topic, and we’ve tried to keep these two micro-courses to around the 30-minute mark. Both courses are intended to be starting points that help build awareness around AI. To access, please click on following links. There is no login required.
Micro Course 1 Parents - ‘Defining AI’ provides a brief overview of the components behind AI and Generative AI technologies.
Micro Course 2 Parents - ‘Ethics and AI’ focuses on the importance of data, and the issues of bias, misinformation, and sustainability.
Tax Receipt - T2202 Tuition and Enrolment Certificate Requires Student’s Social Insurance Number
Students enrolled in qualifying Advanced Placement (AP) courses during the 2024 calendar year (for the period of January - June 2024 and/or September - December 2024), may be eligible to receive a T2202 Tuition and Enrolment Certificate.
As the Canada Revenue Agency requires the inclusion of the student’s Social Insurance Number (SIN) on this certificate, applicable students will be contacted in the coming weeks by Appleby’s business office for their SIN. Although international students will likely not have a SIN, the business office will still reach out to confirm that they do not have one. If you have any questions, please contact Maria Fabrizio, director, finance at mfabrizio@appleby.on.ca.

From November 30 to December 10, 17 Upper Two and Senior Two students, accompanied by three Appleby employees, embarked on an adventure to Chiang Mai, Thailand to explore the themes of social innovation, history and culture. Highlights of the program included a visit to the Wat Rong Kuhn temple in Chiang Rai, caring for Asian elephants at a sanctuary in Mae Sa Valley and a cooking class where students made Thai soups, curries, mango sticky rice, drinks and pad Thai. Students had the opportunity to visit homes in the Hmong and Tai Lue villages where they learned more about their traditional practices, cuisine and cultural backgrounds. Trips to local schools, markets and social enterprises, along with conversations with Buddhist monks challenged the group's perspectives on social impact, culture, and sustainability. |

Appleby College Parents' Association Monthly Meeting – Tuesday, January 14, 2025
The Appleby College Parents’ Association (ACPA) hosts many events throughout the year that allow opportunities to volunteer, connect with other families, and help fundraise for the school. Thank you to those who attended our December social meeting. The ACPA is an integral part of the Appleby community, and we would love for you to join us at our next ACPA Monthly Meeting on Tuesday, January 14. 2025 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the LEC (Barr Commons). If you are unable to attend in person you can join the meeting via Zoom. All are welcome to attend! For any questions, please contact Kathy Vucic, ACPA President.
Christmas Trees and Decorations Needed
The ACPA will happily accept donations of any artificial trees and holiday decorations that you no longer need. If you decide to dispose of any Christmas decor in the New Year, please contact Kathy Vucic, ACPA President to see if they can be used at the school. We love to reuse and will give your trees and decorations a second home.
Blue Dog Spirit
The ACPA, via the Spirit Committee, is working closely with Appleby's Athletics Department to increase parent engagement for Blue Dog sports teams. A Spirit Parent Captain is needed to help facilitate communication to parents and to encourage attendance at home and away games, as well as coordinate volunteers to provide snacks for athletes and coaches. You can also share this role! The impact was amazing during the fall term and we look to continue to build momentum. This is an easy, fun and rewarding opportunity for local and/or away parents to help inspire athletes and the school. Coaches will send emails requesting volunteers when team rosters are complete (mid-November), but please e-mail ACPA Executive member Jennifer Latimer for more information. Go Blue Dogs!
ACPA Book Return and Sale
Donating and purchasing books through the school is a great way to support the ACPA. If you have books to donate, please put them in the box labelled "Book Donations" outside the College Shop. We sell books throughout the school year so donations are always welcome. If you are looking for a book, please check book availability here. The ACPA book exchange is a great way to buy school books at reasonable prices! If you have any questions about the book sales, returns and donations, please contact ACPA book return representatives Bal Chahal, Yan Peng and Emma Zhang.
