While January is an important milestone for new beginnings and fresh resolutions, for students and teachers, it is with the start of the new school year in September that signifies new opportunities and challenges. January is notable more for the start of the winter term, with Appleby athletics focused in the J.S. Gairdner Arena, the pool, and the A.W.B. Alumni Centre for Athletics and Student Life, the Upper Two winter trips to Temagami, the Winter Community Weekend, the All-School Play, and snow days! The school year is in full swing, and I am not boasting when I say that Appleby is in a wonderful place. Our recent set of constituency surveys reflect the positive culture that exists at Appleby and there is a growing sense among more and more of our students that this is their school, where they belong. I think as alumni, we all recognize that there is power in the relationships we formed at Appleby, which continue long after graduation. I have been lucky enough to attend alumni events in Calgary and Vancouver already this year along with the reunion events at Homecoming, and I am always amazed at how well alumni from different years connect and swap stories; there is a special bond created through our time at Appleby across generations. I am looking forward to connecting with many more alumni in Montreal, Kingston, and the U.K. in the coming months and sharing laughs, gaining insight and updates, and remembering the special people that make Appleby so great. Of course, one of those special people who recently passed was Michael Nightingale who remains an icon as a former member of faculty and Director of the Junior School. Michael was inspirational, demanding, precise, kind-hearted, and a wonderful colleague, teacher, and role model for so many. Who can forget his calm approach trying to teach us Latin, his passionate historical enactments of the “coureurs de bois” exploring early Canada, his impressive, unassuming athleticism, and his love of exploration and travel. I wish everyone in the Appleby alumni community a prosperous and fulfilling 2025 and invite you to visit the school at any time. It is fun to come back to see the changes and new initiatives, reminisce, and refresh those bonds to Appleby that are so important for us all. Fraser Grant '87
For the past 50 years, the Appleby College Archives have preserved and documented the ongoing story of the school. As the keeper of Appleby’s institutional memory since 1974, we look forward to celebrating this milestone anniversary by sharing Appleby historical facts, trivia, and more throughout the year in Alumni Ties. DID YOU KNOW- in 1994, members of Varsity Boys Basketball team competed against members of the Hamilton Tiger Cats? Proceeds from the events were donated to Youth Challenge International. The Archives could use your help! If you can identify individuals in the photos found below, please email Shelley Respondek, archivist. April 1994 Quarterly Article
