Student Leadership at Appleby |
![]() |
|
At Appleby College we make the commitment in our Mission Statement, to educate and enable our students to become leaders of character, major contributors to, and valued representatives of their local, national and international communities. As such, leadership opportunities both big and small have been embedded into all aspects of the Appleby experience, helping us to better prepare students with confidence and a service orientation for the world beyond the school. Beginning in Middle School and extending through to Senior School, we facilitate and coach our students in all aspects of leadership – making it an intentional part of the academic curriculum as well as our co-curricular and experiential education programmes. While many people equate leadership to specific roles or positions, we see leadership as being much more about developing self and learning how to engage through informal rather than formal roles. Throughout the school year, students have multiple pathways in which they can pursue leadership development opportunities at Appleby. Each of these has specific responsibilities and time commitments. For example, students can join one of the more than 18 clubs that focus on leadership behaviour and skill development; they can attend different workshops and conferences; or apply to be considered for a formal leadership role at the school (as a Senior One Leader, Prefect or House Council Member). In Middle and Upper School, students are supported as they discover and grow their individual leadership styles and capabilities in preparation for Senior School when they are encouraged to apply for a variety of formal leadership positions including Prefect roles, House Council positions, Chapel Wardens, Argus Editors-in-Chief, Grad-Class Ambassador, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) Council Leaders, Head Student Ambassador, and others. We believe that leadership is an opportunity to do more; to care for one another, and our community. While the application process varies with each role, information about these positions will be shared with students starting in February with formal applications for next year's Senior Leadership roles opening after the March Break. Thank you to all of our current year's student leaders for a fantastic start to the school year! Sincerely, |

Appleby College Expectations – Artificial Intelligence Tools and Student Use
At Appleby College, we will treat AI tools as we would any other technology tool such as a calculator, smartphone or translator. If a faculty member allows the use of AI for a certain assignment, then students may use it if they are acting in accordance with the terms and agreements of the tool. If the assignment guidelines do not explicitly include the use of AI tools, then the use of them will constitute an academic integrity issue.
The consequences for misuse of AI may differ depending on the grade, academic department and assignment type, and therefore, students are asked to pay close attention to assignment outlines and permitted technology tools for all academic work. Students failing to adhere to these standards on examinations will receive a zero (0) on the assessment and a behavioral consequence that is up to and includes expulsion. Those guilty of academic dishonesty on term work or tests are subject to disciplinary action, up to and including expulsion and in alignment with the appropriate grade band consequences of academic dishonesty. These details can be found in the Appleby College Code of Conduct on pages 9-12.

Community Day of Action for Middle Two
On Thursday, December 4, 2025 Middle Two students will participate in a full day of Community Action. Through partnerships with a wide range of local agencies, students will work alongside their peers to learn about not-for-profit organizations and make a meaningful impact in the community. This experience helps students build awareness of needs in surrounding neighbourhoods, develop empathy for people in diverse circumstances, feel empowered and proud of their contributions, and foster a lasting desire to stay engaged in community service. On this day, Middle Two students do not need to wear their uniform and should dress in comfortable, appropriate clothing (that might get dirty) suitable for hands-on activities. Specific details for what to wear will be communicated via email to placement groups as some groups require outdoor wear. Please leave laptops and phones at home and come ready with a positive attitude and excitement to dive into tangible projects that benefit the community.

Students Born in 2008 to 2013 - Who Are Missing Immunization Records With Halton Public Health
This school year, Halton Region Public Health is enforcing Ontario’s Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA) for students born between 2008 and 2013 (students in Middle One through Senior Two) who have missing immunization records on file with Public Health.
Thank you to all parents/guardians and students who have already submitted the required information. Students in this age group whose immunization records are not up to date remain at risk of school suspension until the necessary information is provided to Halton Region Public Health. If you received a letter from Halton Region Public Health indicating that your child is at risk of school suspension, it is due to one or more of the following reasons:
-
Immunizations were received but not reported to Public Health;
-
The student is missing a required vaccine; or
-
Received vaccines do not meet the requirements of Ontario's routine immunization schedule.
Parents/guardians and students who received a letter from Halton Public Health should complete the following actions as soon as possible:
-
Visit halton.ca/immunize to review the student’s record and submit the required information. Students 16 years of age or older should follow the specific access instructions provided on the website.
-
If the student requires immunization, arrange for them to receive the vaccine doses through their regular health care provider*, or at a Public Health Community Immunization Clinic. A limited number of Public Health clinic appointments are now available - visit halton.ca/immunize to check clinic availability and book an appointment.
*Parents/guardians must promptly report all vaccines administered by health care providers to Public Health by visiting halton.ca/immunize.
Tax Receipt - T2202 Tuition and Enrolment Certificate Requires Student’s Social Insurance Number
Students enrolled in qualifying Advanced Placement (AP) courses during the 2025 calendar year (for the period of January - June 2025 and/or September - December 2025), may be eligible to receive a T2202 Tuition and Enrolment Certificate.
As the Canada Revenue Agency requires the inclusion of the student’s Social Insurance Number (SIN) on this certificate, eligible students are asked to visit Appleby’s business office and provide their SIN. In the coming weeks, the Business Office will issue a reminder email to those who have not yet submitted their SIN. Although international students will likely not have a SIN, the business office will still reach out to confirm that they do not have one. If you have any questions, please contact Maria Fabrizio, director, finance at mfabrizio@appleby.on.ca.

ACLC 2025 A Great Success! This year’s Appleby College Leadership Conference (ACLC) brought together passionate student leaders, alumni, and community members for an inspiring day of learning, innovation and collaboration. We are deeply grateful to our alumni and guest speakers who shared their expertise during various leadership panels, and to our Appleby community judges who evaluated our pitch competition, which focused on means to address and alleviate food insecurity in Canada. Congratulations especially to our pitch competition winners: First Place - Shayna Wertheimer, Megan Cao, Jason Liu, Catrina Clark; Second Place - Jayen Chopra, Sienna Bradstock, Adri Olujic, Charlie Masse; Third Place - Anya Mundi, Oliver Stackhouse, Isabella Zhuo, Abi Overdevest. The day was filled with meaningful dialogue on leadership, innovation, and the power of working together to create change. Attendees didn’t just talk about making a difference - they acted on it, coming together to prepare a generous food donation to Food4Kids, reinforcing the notion that leaders of a better tomorrow start today. A special thank you to the ACLC student co-curricular team for their dedication and creativity in delivering such a memorable and impactful event. We look forward to seeing you at ACLC 2026! |
