Global literacy and understanding are core components of who we are as a school. As reflected in our mission and supported by our pillars of strength, as a community we seek to broaden our perspective, develop empathy, embrace our differences and discover the ties that bind us as stewards in an inclusive, sustainable, global community. Demonstrating acceptance is a key aspect of who are as Appleby College and as Blue Dogs.
In recognition of the challenging times our world is facing and the impact these challenges are having on many in our community, today Appleby will be holding a White Dress down day hosted by our International Prefect, Judie Khater and Chapel Prefect, Sam Maalouf to express our collective commitment to awareness, dialogue, and peace amidst the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and others around the world. The entire school community is encouraged to wear white, serving as a visual reminder of our shared aspiration for a more peaceful world, emphasizing the importance of compassion and understanding in the face of adversity.
In addition to embracing the diversity of our community here on campus, it is through programming such as Appleby’s global experiential trips that our students immerse themselves in global experiences and further global understanding outside one's own culture.
For over 20 years, Appleby has offered Global Experiential programming and we are thrilled to be continuing this legacy throughout the 2023-2024 school year with 16 trips planned to destinations around the globe.
Following on from trips at the beginning of the school year to Scotland and Kenya, global experiential trip participants recently returned from Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador (Galapagos Islands) and Guatemala. Welcome back to the 62 students and faculty who engaged in a variety of unique learning opportunities ranging from biology and field research to sustainability and community engagement to food systems and cultural identity.
The group in Colombia explored the country’s Indigenous and colonial history while looking critically at issues of economic inequality, sustainable tourism and recent regional political developments. While in Costa Rica, students travelled into the heart of the rainforest to visit the Bribri people and shared with a community of Indigenous people in the village of Yorkín for whom consuming “stuff” has always been less important than other pursuits such as free time, community, solidarity and respect for nature. In the Galapagos Islands, the group worked with Ecology Project International’s programs and participated in ongoing field research on the Islands’ Giant Tortoise population. Finally, in Guatemala, students focused on the Lake Atitlán region of the country and engaged with local farmers, activists and educators while involved with projects aimed at food justice, cultural identity, agroecology and fair trade. Additional details about these experiences along with photos will be shared in a future issue of Appleby This Week.
The next series of global experiential trips will be taking place in the spring, beginning in March 2024 to Argentina, Cambodia, Ecuador, Germany, Greece, Indonesia (Bali), and Senegal. Trips to Iceland, Italy and France will follow in April/May 2024. We look forward to sharing more about these exciting trips in the coming months.
Also this spring, details on the December global experiential trips planned for the 2024-2025 school year will be shared during a Global Experiential Trip information session. This will be an opportunity to learn more about the application process as well as details about individual trips. Additional information regarding date, time and location will be shared in a future issue of Appleby This Week.
Sincerely,

Our Commitment to Wellbeing
At Appleby College, it is our goal that every Appleby student graduates with a deep sense of themselves, of mental health literacy and how to use wellbeing strategies to navigate and manage the demands of a complex world.
The Appleby Care Team (ACT) plays an important role in the school’s commitment to wellbeing. At Appleby, we ACT on mental health concerns through the support of in-school mental health experts. This includes the Director of the Health Centre, the mental health support nurse, and the Director of Guidance, Student Services and School Counsellors.
The role of ACT is to respond to student concerns identified by members of the Appleby community. As outlined in the school’s comprehensive mental health protocol ACT will assess risk, recommend supports, and communicate with all of those in the student’s circle of care. ACT also plays a pivotal role in a student’s reintegration back to school post a mental health related absence.
Visit www.appleby.on.ca/our-strategic-vision for more information.
