Academy Role Descriptions 

Enrichment Teacher

The purpose of an Enrichment Teacher is to teach a one-week enrichment course in the Summer Academy, engaging students in the summer learning environment and delivering Appleby College curriculum. 
Our enrichment courses are designed to engage learners with hands-on activities and creative lessons that focus on improving skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, leadership and collaboration, organization, and public speaking, in small classes that foster a sense of community and belonging. 
Enrichment Teachers will develop, plan and supervise their summer program, will lead and instruct specialized activities within the program description. Enrichment Junior and Senior Programs are both staffed by Enrichment Teachers. Enrichment Junior programs have daily active programming 

ESL Teachers

ESL Teachers will support the ESL Summer Program’s mission to provide fantastic summer learning opportunities and will be responsible for teaching an ESL credit course in one of five levels (Levels A through E) following the Ministry of Education’s guidelines, as well as completing diagnostic tests on the first day of the program. Teachers will deliver both on-campus and excursion programs.
Appleby College’s Summer ESL Program welcomes students from around the world with diverse languages and backgrounds. Students attend Appleby College to improve their English language skills and experience Canada. The ESL Program is modeled after the Appleby College student experience, with a goal of providing summer students with a snapshot of what life as an Appleby College student is like. Students will live in boarding, attend class, participate in extra-curricular activities, and off-campus excursions 

Day Camp Role Descriptions 

Head Instructor
As the Head Instructor you will be responsible for providing the lead instruction in the program as well as overseeing the work of other instructors in order to ensure a safe, productive and enjoyable experience for all campers. Applicant should be a post-secondary educate or equivalent in a related discipline.

Head Instructors will develop, plan and supervise their summer camp program, will lead and instruct specialized activities with campers and Instructors. They will also create schedules for activities that all for the highest quality experience and ensures flexibility to coordinate with other programs. Head Instructors are also responsible for all administrative tasks specific to their camp. University/college degree or diploma is an asset.

Applicants for this position should have completed min. 2nd year university/college.

Instructor, Level 2
As the Instructor, Level 2, you will be responsible for directly supporting the Head Instructor within specific sports or arts area. The Instructor, Level 2, will work as part of a team to ensure a safe, productive and enjoyable experience for all campers. This position requires a high level of experience and quality leadership skills.

Level 2 Instructors will assist in planning as well as participating in activities with the campers. They will also maintain a positive relationship with campers, parents and other staff. Level 2 Instructors will provide instructions and run activities confidently in front of groups or campers.

Applicants for this position should have a minimum of of 2nd year university/college and have thorough knowledge & previous experience in specific area of instruction (Sports, Arts, Science or Other Programs).

Instructor, Level 1
As the Instructor, Level I, you will be responsible for providing support to the Head Instructor and the Level 2 instructor within a specific camp program. The Instructor Level I will work as part of a team to ensure a safe, productive and enjoyable experience for all campers.

Instructor Level 1 will actively participate in all assigned aspects of the campers’ day including activities, meal times, games etc.

Applicants for this position should have completed a minimum of Grade 9 and/or be 15 years of age.

Instructor, Before & After Care
The Before & After Care instructors will assist with the implementation of the Before and/or After Camp Care program. The role will report to the Before & After Care Supervisor. Leaders will facilitate a high-quality program, running various activities specific to age group.

Applicants for this position should have completed a minimum of Grade 11 and should engage campers in fun, recreational and variety of age-specific activities. Instructors will communicate daily with parents in an open and supportive manner and will respond to the individual needs of the campers and establish a safe pick up and drop off for all campers.

Communications Team (Photographers, Videographers)
Under the supervision of the Program Director, Media, the Communications Photographer will photograph or film participants for the various summer programs offered and produce weekly slideshows and web galleries, or other program materials as requested.  

Working co-operatively with Program Directors and Instructors, the Communications Photographer will engage participants with enthusiasm and energy making photo and video opportunities fun for everyone. The Communications Photographers will also provide instruction and direction to Communications Volunteers.

Lifeguard
As a Lifeguard, you will be responsible for diligently monitoring the activities in the pool areas to prevent accidents and provide a safe environment to campers.  Under the supervision of the Head Lifeguard, Lifeguards will ensure the health and safety of campers and staff while in the pool area, perform assessments and classifications of the swimming ability for each swimmer, perform rescues and administer first aid as required.

Candidates must be at least 16 years of age with a current NL certification and lifeguarding experience.

Inclusion Facilitator
Inclusion Facilitators are responsible for providing 1-to-1 inclusion support to campers with exceptionalities, in addition to providing support to the Head Instructor, as well as Instructors, Level I & II, within a specific camp program to ensure that camp activities are inclusive to all participants.

The Inclusion Facilitator creates programming to integrate campers with exceptionalities into camp activities and communicates with parents of assigned campers to provide regular feedback.  They work as part of a team to ensure a safe, productive and enjoyable experience for all campers.

Mandarin Speaking Instructor
Mandarin Speaking Instructors are responsible for directly supporting the Head Instructor, as well as the Instructor, Level II within specific sports or arts areas. You will work as part of a team to ensure a safe, productive and enjoyable experience for all campers and act as a translation resource to all camp staff when needed for E.L.L Campers, in addition to creating programming to integrate E.L.L. campers into camp activities and provide support to campers from our C.E.C. (Canadian Experience Camp) program who speak Mandarin.

Program Director
The Program Directors are responsible for managing, operating and overseeing the Appleby Summer Camp Program area & the assigned camp staff. Reporting to the Camp Director, this position involves extensive planning, program development & enhancement, facilitating cross-camp activities/themes, camper and parent care and engagement, staff training and risk management. The program director team has multiple different roles, with experience and requirements suited to the role.

Volunteer
Under the supervision of the Head Instructor, the Volunteer Instructor will provide assistance within a specific program area. The Volunteer Instructor will participate as part of a team offering support and ensuring an enjoyable experience for all campers. Applicants for this position should have completed min. Grade 8 and/or be 14 years of age and will work closely with the Head Instructor providing support within assigned areas.

By the end of the program all Leadership campers will be certified in Standard First Aid and CPR – C (which is the level of first aid they would need to volunteer at Appleby Camps).

Boarding and Overnight Roles

Boarding Staff
Boarding Staff play a key role in creating a safe, supportive, and enjoyable environment for students in the boarding program. You will supervise daily routines, oversee activities both on and off campus, and support program staff in planning and delivering engaging experiences. Boarding Staff also foster a positive community in the residence, ensuring students feel welcomed and supported while maintaining high standards of care and safety. This position involves a mix of leadership, mentorship, and administrative responsibilities, offering a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on students’ boarding experience. Boarding staff reside on campus for the duration of their employment.

Program Director
The Program Directors are responsible for overseeing the Appleby Summer Boarding Program, ensuring a safe, engaging, and enriching experience for all boarding students. This role involves extensive planning, program development, and enhancement, as well as supporting the Boarding Staff in delivering exceptional care and supervision. Key responsibilities include coordinating cross-program activities and themes, fostering strong communication with students and parents, leading staff training, and ensuring adherence to risk management protocols Boarding Program Directors reside on campus for the duration of their employment.

Admin Assistant
The Boarding Admin Assistant provides administrative support to the boarding program, including processing registrations and documentation for the Summer ESL Program, CEC Program, Summer Academy, and Enrichment initiatives. Responsibilities include handling room assignments, supporting employee onboarding, and preparing materials for programs, excursions, and duty binders. Additional tasks involve coordinating participant welcomes, departures, and airport transfers, performing reception duties, and creating certificates, report cards, and surveys. The role also provides support to the Boarding Programs Office to ensure a seamless and successful summer experience for participants and staff. The admin assistant does not reside on campus.
