The Chapel

IN THIS SECTION

"The Chapel is a vital element of school life at Appleby College. While it has its roots in the Anglican tradition, we seek to embrace and encourage the expression of all the major religious traditions within our Chapel services. Many are planned and presented by our (Appleby’s) students. Through the Chapel program at Appleby we help students strive to be their best selves by living out the four core values of respect, responsibility, integrity and compassion."

REV. CRAIG LUCCOCK - CHAPLAIN

Brief History

In 1918, five Old Boys approached the Headmaster to build a school chapel as a memorial to the eight Old Boys and one Master who had died in the Great War. The architectural firm of Shepard and Calvin, Toronto, designed the Gothic chapel using lake stone for its exterior walls. Construction began in 1920 and was completed in 1929. In 1967, the Chapel was enlarged to accommodate a growing student body. The chapel re-opened in the spring of 1968 as the John Bell Chapel, in appreciation of Rev Canon John A.M. Bell, the school’s third Headmaster.

The Chapel is a vital element of school life at Appleby College. It is a central gathering place for our community, one that evokes cherished memories for students, Alumni and employees alike. Students attend Chapel on either Tuesday or Thursday during the Community Life Block as well as a Chapel Service on Friday. Many of the services are planned and presented by students and reflect the school’s four core values of RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, INTEGRITY AND COMPASSION. A highlight of Appleby’s Chapel programme are the student’s Chapel speeches.

While the Chapel has its roots in the Anglican faith, we seek to embrace and encourage the expression of all the major religious traditions within our Chapel services. The school chaplain is an Anglican Priest, licensed by the Bishop of Niagara, who leads and provides pastoral care for Appleby students, employees and alumni.
